The Real Housewives of New Jersey Recap: Poker Face

The Real Housewives of New Jersey made their way back from the shore this week to play a little poker and kick one little Jersey girl out of the her luxurious nest.

We break down all the drama in our patented THG +/- recap below!

Say bye bye. That was Jacqueline's response as Ashlee whined about packing to leave for Vegas. Plus 10 because it was so pathetic it was funny.

They sent her off with Albie to avoid a family meltdown at the airport hoping that she'd get on the plane without incident. It sounds good…in theory.

Jersey-ites

Minus 7 because Albie couldn't be bothered to park the car and walk his wayward cousin to the security checkpoint. Instead he drops her at the curb and there's no doubt she'll be home by dark.

Sure enough, Albie gets the call as he's driving home. Somehow Ashlee missed her flight. Minus 12. This girl is pathetic. I know it's because she doesn't want to go but it is sad when a 20-year-old can't check herself in at an airport.

Chris is right, his step-daughter has no common sense. Her answer to stress is wishing she could buy herself a drink. Ashlee may be headed down a hard road all of her own making.

This time Chris drives her to the airport to make sure it's done right. Plus 10. At home Jacqueline looks at pictures of her little girl and cries. I understand she's upset but it's not like some awful tragedy has befallen her daughter. Ashlee's a spoiled brat and when people stop handing her stuff maybe she'll grow up.

Apparently Ashlee isn't the only Jersey girl having issues. Lauren's cosmetic business is a bust. She says she wasn't getting the respect she deserved so she packed up her kiosk at Chateau and walked away…the day after her grand opening party! Minus 15. Seriously, don't you have to at least put some actual work into the business to earn respect?

Sorry About the Book ...

The diet she's going on looks ridiculous. Minus 5. Although I have no doubt if she sticks to it she'll lose weight, I'll also bet she'll gain it right back once she starts eating real food again.

Speaking of failed businesses, Joe Guidice's pizzeria has a closed sign on the door. Well, that didn't last long. Now he's planning to buy the gas station across the street and turn the property into an over 55 residence. When Teresa asks if the gas station owner knows he'll be evicted, Joe says no but it's no big deal. Minus 15! I think it will be a big deal for the owner.

Across town, Kathy and Rich's son is e-mailed a topless picture of a girl. Plus 8 for Kathy's response. I thought she handled it well. Minus 10 to Rich. There are times when his jokes are just a little too sleazy.

Finally the whole gang gets together and Teresa takes the moment to once again apologize for her book…or sort of apologize. It never really comes across that she's sorry for anything. Minus 7 Teresa can't seem to let it go and then she's begging people to read the book because once they do they'll really get into it. Um…it's a cookbook, right? How into it can you be?

The boys head into the next room to play a little poker and most of the fun occurs off camera. Rich and Joe Guidice end up having a wrestling match over something vital like who's the taller Joe. Then Guidice makes a grab at Rich below the belt and later jokes that there was nothing to grab.

Uh, is that normally where guys grab one another during a fight?  Well, maybe short guys. Minus 13.

Melissa Gorga Singing

In the end Joe ends up with a candlestick holder in the eye. Yeah, I don't get it either.

But Joe's stuck at home now playing Mr. Mom while Teresa's doing her book signings. As usual the kids are little terrors but at least Milania only called Gia a hooker this week. Plus 8. That's a step up from calling her sister a stupid whore.

Finally. Melissa tries to have a romantic dinner but Joe can't stop thinking about babies and sex. Then Melissa tells him she recorded a love ballad for him. It's actually not bad. Joe says the song turns him on. No kidding. What doesn't turn him on?

So who thinks we'll see Ashlee back again before the end of the season? Who thinks we'll see her back next week? Something tells me that Jersey girl will be back before we know it.

Micromax's Superfone A50 Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken

Micromax's A50 Superfone Ninja enters India with AISHA voice assistant, forgets its shuriken

Hoping to compete with the Siris of the world, Micromax has announced its new Superfone A50 Ninja alongside a novel feature dubbed AISHA -- which is short for Artificial Intelligence Speech Handset Assistant. Similar to Cupertino's personal secretary, AISHA vows to help folks with every-day elements such as making calls, setting up calendar events and even reporting what the weather looks like. Much to our disappointment, however, the A50 Ninja runs a not-so-new flavor of Android -- Gingerbread to be exact -- and Micromax left out any mention of Android 4.0. On the specs front, the dual-SIM Superfone sports a 3.1-inch display (mum's the word on the resolution), a two-megapixel shooter, Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities and an unspecified 650MHz processor. All in all, thanks to its 4,999 rupees (around $95) budget price, we can't imagine you'd complain too much. Be sure to hit up the Micromax link below if you're interested in grabbing one of these.

Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?

Image

You know the drill -- grab yourself a spoonful of Morton's and get ready for another supposed leak of a gadget. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being one of Research In Motion's BlackBerry 10 "Development Alpha" devices that'll be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company promised a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at Crackberry's forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the PlayBook. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a roll RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the source links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.

Attention, Twihards: stop bidding on the Breaking Dawn sex pillow and feast your eyes on the following photos.

Summit Entertainment has released a pair of new photos from the final Twilight Saga installment - first posted by our friends at Movie Fanatic - and we've got your early look below.

It's not an especially exciting early look, we grant you, it's just a glimpse at the newly-married Cullens and at Taylor Lautner as Jacob. But since when has anyone minded staring at these three, right? That's what we figured...

Last month, Summit also unveiled the first Breaking Dawn Part 2 trailer, featuring Bella as a vampire. It's rather awesome.

Google asks car makers "Ullo John, wanna self-driving motor?"

Image

Larry Page's tenure as Googler-in-chief has heralded the death of many ambitious experiments, but even he refuses to kill the self-driving car. His project head, Anthony Levandowski, has now asked the car makers of Detroit to sign up with Mountain View for hardware testing, saying that if driverless cars are not ready by the next decade, then it's "shame on us as engineers." There's still some way to go before the tech is road-worthy, but Google is already working with insurers to work out how your car is going to handle making that call to Geico when things go wrong.

Microsoft cuts pre-Mango holdouts, Zune desktop software off from WP7 app purchases

Microsoft cuts pre-Mango holdouts, Zune desktop software off from WP7 app purchases

Microsoft's Windows Phone team is making a few changes to how users are able to acquire apps on their devices but luckily, they probably won't affect most of you. Starting today, users can no longer get apps from the Zune desktop software (the app store will remain for the Zune HD, as shown above), so they'll need to browse via the website or directly on their phones, which Microsoft says the majority of users were already doing. The other change is that in the next few weeks, any users who have not upgraded their handsets to Windows Phone 7.5 Mango will no longer be able to download, update or review apps. Since the update is available for all Windows Phones (Android, we're mostly talking about you) this shouldn't be too much of a problem, and any laggards will regain their access after upgrading.

On a final note, the developer blog mentions the software needed for hardware partners to create phones for Bahrain, Israel, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, UAE and Vietnam and that there will be more news on these storefronts "in the weeks ahead." With these moves, the squad has culled any reason to open a heavy memory hungry desktop program just to install some new apps from a PC (iTunes, we're completely talking about you) and devs can write off supporting users still running on old platforms guilt-free. All that in one day? We bet they didn't even have to use their AK -- those old zune:// links however, will be missed.

Student loans: Is petition to forgive debt completely a good idea?

Students and parents will think so. But blanket amnesty for all student loans could destroy the student-loan system and might not do much to address the underlying problem.?

Large numbers tend to get people?s attention, especially the 13-digit kind. So now with news that student college debt is hitting the $1,000,000,000,000 mark, everyone seems to be talking about it.

President Obama wants to delay the interest-rate hike on government-backed student loans scheduled for this July and will say so in his Saturday radio address ? and then again when he hits college campuses next week to promote the plan. For their part, Department of Education officials stood up for the plan on Friday. And April 25, the Occupy movement is set to occupy colleges to highlight the issue.?

But an online petition that has gathered nearly 700,000 signatures has a better idea ? erase the debt completely, says creator Robert Applebaum.

?Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans will have an immediate stimulative effect on our economy," he says in the petition. "With the stroke of the president's pen, millions of Americans would suddenly have hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of extra dollars in their pockets each and every month to spend on ailing sectors of the economy."

Forgiving student loan debt, he adds, ?rather than tax cuts for corporations, millionaires, and billionaires, has a much greater chance of helping to raise [the economic] tide in a much shorter time-frame.?

But while the idea has certainly gotten the ear of beleaguered grads ? and their families ? erasing a?trillion dollars of debt by presidential fiat could destroy the future of college loans while doing nothing to address the underlying problem, economists and financial experts say.

Regardless of whether the loan is a government or private loan, forgiveness will mean someone loses. Either the taxpayers in aggregate in the case of federal loans or private lenders on private loans

?Who in their right mind, A) would make loans to students if the loans can be forgiven later on? Or B) invest in an income trust vehicle where the asset of the investment can disappear due to 'forgiveness?' ??says?Kevin Worthley, a?certified financial planner in?Rhode Island and a specialist in college financial strategies,?via e-mail.?

Even if there were lenders willing to risk their money, ?the interest rate they would rightfully require for the risk incurred may likely be far more than future students would be willing to pay and cries of 'usury' to the government could result,? he adds.

Credit is?fundamentally based upon trust, agrees?Mitchell Weiss, adjunct professor at the University of Hartford's?Barney School of Business?in Connecticut.

?If I loan you some money, I trust that you?re going to pay it back to me,? he says. ?Wholesale forgiveness, amnesty ? whatever you want to call it ? will fundamentally undermine a process that is thoroughly integrated within our society.??

Moreover, it doesn't really solve the problem, says Professor Weiss.

?Students need better financial tools," says Weiss, the author of ?Life Happens,? a textbook for student financial planning. "But the laws need to be adjusted as well, Bankruptcy laws need to be amended."

A 2005 change in bankruptcy law means that "education loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy except in cases of undue hardship.? This, he says, "is really tough to prove.?

Loosening the law would give lenders and ex-students more leeway to find compromises, he says.?

?When a lender knows that the person that?s sitting on the other side of the table has the ability to pull the plug by declaring bankruptcy, and ... that lender doesn?t have collateral to foreclose upon in order to make itself whole, then that lender is pretty motivated to find a compromise solution to avoid the loss that would surely follow,? he says.?

Will the petition make any difference?

Possibly, says Lindsay Hoffman, communication professor at the University of Delaware. Online social media has the ability to reverse the relationship between the government and the governed, she notes.

?Politicians used to set out what they thought was important and voters would respond,? she says, but ?what we are seeing here is a reversal of the agenda-setting process.?

Increasingly powerful social media tools such as this online petition have the power to ?set the agenda and politicians respond to those collective voices being raised.?

"That,? she says, ?is something new.?

Indeed, the political action group Moveon.org has picked up on the momentum behind Mr. Applebaum's original petition to funnel support to a bill now before Congress, the Student Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012, which would help students with loans ? though it is not a complete amnesty.?

Barry Sonnenfeld Talks Men in Black 3

barry sonnenfeld men black 3 ending reboot

Buzz around the upcoming Men in Black III has improved in recent months ? thanks to the release of an overall decent full-length trailer, coupled with the promise of both new inspired celebrity ?alien? cameos and imaginative extraterrestrials designed by makeup/effects icon, Rick Baker. Hence, there?s been more reason to suspect that MIB 3 could both rake in lots of dough and?leave moviegoers wanting? well, Men in Black IV, basically.

In a recent promotional interview for the sci-fi comic book movie threequel, MIB franchise director Barry Sonnenfeld addressed many a topic of interest concerning Men in Black III ? including, the much-publicized tumultuous development process for the film (which he describes as the most ?emotional? of the trilogy) and how MIB 3 serves as a fitting finale for the series? while also leaving the door open for a (dare we say it) reboot.

Here is Sonnenfeld revealing the history behind the time-travel storyline for Men in Black III (via MTV):

?I think the important thing is to have a new, different story to tell. We didn?t want another regular caper where some alien just comes down to threaten Earth, and the Men in Black have to solve it. The big idea ? and it was actually Will?s idea, while we were shooting ?Men in Black 2? one night for an exterior shot. He said to me, ?Barry, for ?Men in Black 3,? Agent J needs to go back in time to save Tommy Lee Jones? [character] from some event that?s happened decades earlier. He needs to learn something about Tommy?s character that he didn?t know before.? That was the genesis. Ten years later, we?re about to come out and show the world what that meant.?

Sonnenfeld goes on to offer a?description (with MILD SPOILERS) of the first act in Men in Black III ? the end result of which is Agent J heading back to 1969, where he meets up with a younger Agent K (Josh Brolin) ? which you can read by checking out the full MTV article. However, he sums it up with the following statement about the ending.

?? The second and third act is all about tracking down [the villain Boris, played by Jemaine Clement] and [J] renewing his friendship with a different K than the K he knows from 40 years in the future. What?s really cool is that J is constantly wondering why this guy who seems sort of open and happy became the sort of curmudgeon that has been his partner for the last 14 years. He makes a discovery about that. So, ?Men in Black 3? is by far the most emotional of the movies. It has a really surprising ending.?

It?s interesting?(if not entirely encouraging)?to learn that the third MIB flick was actually envisioned as a timeline-disrupting adventure from the get-go, considering how such story elements tend to be incorporated into franchises only by the time they?re either in need of a shakeup (Star Trek) or have seemingly run out of gas otherwise (Shrek). Still, the promise that MIB 3 will offer some closure for longtime fans of the series ? that?s certainly welcome.

men black 2 trailer will smith josh brolin

With regards to the documented strenuous task that was bringing Men in Black III to cinematic life, Sonnenfeld said:

?First of all, I don?t know that I?ve ever been on a shoot that?wasn?t?stressful for the director. I think all movies are stressful in different ways. What was reported on this one was that we took a several-months hiatus to work on the script. As it relates to that, that concept was built into the shooting schedule. We wanted the next movie Will Smith was in after a long time where he wasn?t in movies to be ?Men in Black 3.? We also wanted to shoot in New York, which had a tax incentive that was about to expire. It?didn?t?expire, but we didn?t know it wasn?t going to expire, because New York state legislature had to vote it in again, and we weren?t sure that was going to happen. So we started the movie with a full script and with a really great first act ? but the second and third needed work. We built in a two-month hiatus so we could continue working on the script and not need an eight-week reshoot. So that?s what we did. The truth is, the great thing about the movie, is that there was no stress between myself and any of the actors. We all got along very well. You don?t ever want a director and a movie star who see two different movies. But we all were working with the same ideas in mind. We knew the characters, we knew the history, and we were very much in sync.?

That?s a somewhat more diplomatic (and wordy) response than Sonnenfeld?s previous comments on the MIB 3 production process ? wherein he admitted that the approach could either be ?genius? [or] a really stupid idea,? depending on how the final product turns out. Seeing how the director is coming off what many people feel was a weak second installment in the MIB series, the idea that Sonnenfeld and his crew would intentionally take such a roundabout approach to making Part 3 does raises some concern.

On the other hand, it?s a well-established rule in Hollywood that some of the best movies are those that result from pretty hectic (if not downright crazy) production processes -?so MIB 3 certainly has that?working in its favor.

men black 3 will smith josh brolin

In summation, it?s best to keep all that in mind while you read Sonnenfeld?s concluding assurance that Men in Black III?aims to pull double-duty as a fitting trilogy finale and?a rebirth of the series:

?The fantastic thing about ?Men in Black 3? is that it totally closes out the trilogy, it answers questions that you didn?t even know you should be asking, it leaves you emotionally warm and sad and happy,?and?it could also reboot the franchise. But I can?t even begin to tell you how to interpret all of that. [Laughs] But I would say this: If your interpretation is that ?Men in Black 4? will only star the worm guys and Frank the pug, you are wrong.?

We will find out for certain if the Men in Black will go on to fight another day ? or finally head into retirement ? when Men in Black III opens in theaters (2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) around the U.S. on May 25th, 2012.
