ALEX SCHADENBERG, Euthanasia Prevention Coalition ...

The following article was written by Wesley Smith and published on February 22 under the title: Euthanasia Euphemisms. Wesley Smith, February 22, 2013

When a social movement must rely on euphemisms to obfuscate its goals, it is a good bet that there is something wrong with its agenda. From the very beginning of the modern movement, euthanasia advocates have euphemistically bent language as a means of convincing society to endorse killing?an accurate and descriptive term that simply means to end life?as an acceptable method of ending human suffering.

Euthanasia, from the Greek, literally means ?good death.? As the historian Ian Dowbiggin has noted, the term once described ?a calm and easy? natural death at home, ?so family members and friends could say their farewells.?

That changed after an 1870 essay by a teacher named Samuel D. Williams was published arguing that the value of human life depends on whether it is ?worthwhile?? an idea known today as the ?quality of life ethic? ? and moreover, that mercy killing and assisted suicide should be allowed for those who are ?hopelessly suffering.? The essay went viral ?to use today?s terminology?and within a few years, the word euthanasia had taken on its modern meaning. The euthanasia movement has been coining new definitions and idioms ever since.

The movement?s latest euphemistic phrase is ?aid in dying,? promoted most prominently by the (euphemistically) named assisted suicide advocacy organization Compassion and Choices (which came into being after a merger with the more descriptively named Hemlock Society). According to C&C, when a terminally ill patient swallows an intentionally prescribed lethal overdose of barbiturates, it isn?t really suicide. Why? Because the word ?suicide? has negative connotations, and C&C wants people to feel positive about some self-killings.

Here?s the idea: A terminally ill patient doesn?t really want to die, but has no choice. Hence, taking an intentionally prescribed lethal overdose of ?medication?? another euphemism, since the purpose is not to treat but to poison oneself?doesn?t constitute suicide. Thus, in a C&C press release from a few years ago boosting use of ?aid in dying,? the (late) Peter Goodwin, a prominent assisted suicide-participating doctor, said, ?As a physician, I resent the term ?physician-assisted suicide.? I never felt I was assisting a suicidal patient, but rather aiding a patient with his or her end of life choice.? Since then, ?aid in dying? has become ubiquitous in media stories and assisted suicide advocacy.

Note that Goodwin?s complaint had nothing to do with accuracy and everything to do with emotions. He ?feels? rather than ?thinks.? And that?s how C&C wants listeners and readers to react?emotionally rather than rationally?toward the end that people are more likely to approve of legalizing assisted suicide if it isn?t called what it actually is.

But surely, accurate language must still mean something in public policy debates. Suicide is defined as ?the act or an instance of taking one?s own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind.? Thus, under C&C?s reckoning, if the distraught owner of, say, a failed business intentionally takes an overdose of prescribed sleeping pills, it?s suicide. But if the same man takes the pills because he has cancer, and the doctor prescribed the pills for that purpose, it isn?t suicide. That?s nonsensical.

Assisted suicide proponents claim that changing the lexicon is necessary to avoid furthering a supposed stigma associated with suicide. I am not sure whether that stigma exists anymore. But if some suicidal people don?t kill themselves because they worry what others might think, why is that so bad? I mean, the outcome is a saved or extended life. Indeed, many once-suicidal terminally ill people later come to be glad that they didn?t do the deed. Aren?t their lives worth protecting?

I want to make it very clear that I don?t think we should judge or condemn anyone who is suicidal or commits suicide. None of us knows what our own emotional limits might be. Given sufficient despair, fear, or pain, any of us might be attracted to the siren song of self-destruction. The good news is that such causes of despair can often be treated and overcome?including in the dying.

The real issue, then, is how we react to our brothers and sisters who have fallen into a darkness sufficient to make them want to end it all. Should we engage in suicide prevention for all, or only for some? I believe that the dying deserve to have their suicidal desires treated just as seriously as the despairing widow or the troubled teen.

That?s certainly the hospice philosophy, the truly compassionate approach to terminal illness. In contrast to assisted suicide?which is about dying?hospice is about living. Hospice does not seek to simply ?extend life? but maintain its quality to the natural end, and that explicitly includes suicide prevention.

Assisted suicide is suicide. The term is descriptive and accurate. When legalized, it amounts to state-approved suicide, an issue too culturally consequential for us to allow gooey euphemisms to serve as the sugar that helps the bitter hemlock go down.

M?venpick celebrates Asian development milestone | News ...

M?venpick Hotels & Resorts has embarked on a journey to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year with the signing of two new hotels in China and Thailand. The upscale hotel company of Swiss heritage is to open a new beach resort in Hua Hin, Thailand, and a 250-rooom hotel in Enshi City, China.

?The M?venpick Hotel Enshi will be our first opening in China, marking an important milestone for our company. Chinese consumers regard Swiss products and services as refreshingly different and we are looking forward to leveraging our Swiss roots and culinary legacy to carve a unique niche in this fascinating country,? said Andreas Mattm?ller, chief operating officer for M?venpick Hotels & Resorts, Middle East and Asia.

The new 14-storey, five-star M?venpick Hotel Enshi is set to open this summer and will be based in the heart of the business district of Enshi City, Hubei Province located in Central China. The property will be situated just 2.5 kilometres from the airport and a short drive from stunning countryside that includes the spectacular Enshi Grand Canyon.

The M?venpick Hotel Enshi will be the first five-star hotel in the city and will feature a contemporary design, two restaurants, a bar, a club lounge, 515-square-metre ballroom, eight meeting rooms, a pool, spa and a fitness centre.

By 2015, M?venpick Hotels & Resorts will have four properties open in China: the upcoming hotel in Enshi; a 380-room resort on Phoenix Island, Sanya; a 350-room property in Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, and a 300-room hotel in Jiading, Shanghai.

Within three years, the company will also be operating eight hotels in Thailand with two in Chiang Mai and one each in Koh Samui, Bangkok and Pattaya in addition to the new signing, the 190-room M?venpick Resort & Spa, Hua Hin. The upcoming properties will complement the two existing M?venpick resorts in Phuket.

The newest management contract signing is in Hua Hin, on the West Coast of the Gulf of Thailand, a leisure destination famous for its pristine beaches, golf courses, hill hiking, water sports and cultural attractions.

In keeping with the philosophy of M?venpick Hotels & Resorts to offer guests upscale properties that reflect local ambience and culture, the design of the new hotel will take its inspiration from the Thai beach resort atmosphere and offer lush landscaped gardens, two restaurants, a lobby lounge, ballroom, pool, spa and function rooms.

The two new signings are in line with the global strategy of M?venpick Hotels & Resorts to open 100 hotels across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia by 2015, evenly allocating around 25 properties to each region.

?These are exciting times for M?venpick Hotels & Resorts in Asia and we look forward to building on our reputation for quality, reliability and care with a personal touch throughout the region,? added Mattm?ller.

At present the company operates seven properties in Asia, including two hotels in Vietnam, one each in Singapore and The Philippines, another in India and two in Thailand ? the M?venpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket and the M?venpick Resort Bangtao Beach Phuket.

The US Postal Service Could Easily Turn Things Around With Belgian Chocolate-Flavored Stamps

It can't just be the United States Postal Service that's having a hard time staying afloat. Email and social networking is available all around the world, but maybe the USPS should take a hint from the clever Belgians who've created a collection of stamps that celebrate—and actually smell and taste like—chocolate. Judge leans toward letting Jackson suit continue

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A jury should decide whether the promoter of Michael Jackson's final concerts negligently hired and supervised the physician convicted of causing the singer's death, a judge tentatively ruled Monday.

If the ruling stands, it will allow the case by Jackson's mother, Katherine, to go forward and present the theory that concert giant AEG Live controlled the physician who gave the superstar a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol.

Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos' tentative ruling however eliminates some of Katherine Jackson's claims and an attorney for AEG predicted the company would win at trial.

It is unclear when the ruling will be finalized, or whether the judge will change it. She heard two hours of arguments about the case on Monday but didn't indicate whether her mind had been changed.

AEG attorney Marvin Putnam said he was pleased with the ruling and reiterated his belief that the case should have never been filed.

The case centers on whether AEG did an appropriate investigation of Conrad Murray, a former cardiologist who is serving his sentence after being convicted of the involuntary manslaughter of the pop singer. The case also involves whether AEG controlled him while Jackson prepared for a series of comeback concerts.

Katherine Jackson's attorney, Kevin Boyle, declined comment after the hearing, saying he wanted to see the final order.

He told Palazuelos that AEG created a division of loyalties for Murray between his care of Jackson and maintaining an arrangement that would have paid him $150,000 a month to care for the singer.

Jackson died before Murray's contract was signed, and AEG argues he was not an employee of the company.

"AEG just made this more risky for Michael," Boyle argued Monday.

He said the case was unique and it should proceed intact with claims that AEG is liable for Murray's actions. "This has never happened before, or at least no one's been caught," Boyle said.

Putnam argued that by the time it was negotiating Murray's contract to treat Jackson while performing a series of London concerts, the doctor had already been treating the singer for some time, had relocated from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and had ordered large amounts of propofol to help Jackson sleep.

"Sadly, it appears that Michael Jackson's death would have occurred anyway," Putnam said after the hearing.

Katherine Jackson sued in September 2010 and a trial has been scheduled for early April.

Why Corporate Twitter Accounts Get Hacked

Earlier this week, Internet users were treated to another reminder that some of the world's biggest brands don't have the firmest of grasps on their Twitter accounts.

On Monday (Feb. 18), the Burger King Twitter account was hijacked, resulting in a stream of foul-mouthed, funny tweets about how the company had been bought by rival McDonald's.

On Tuesday, it was Jeep's turn, with a string of tweets promoting mostly obscure rappers. (MTV's own Twitter hijack later Tuesday turned out to be a marketing stunt.)

Why are so many corporate Twitter accounts being hacked and hijacked?

Easy-to-guess passwords are initially to blame, but experts said poor passwords indicate a bigger problem: Many big companies simply just don't take social media seriously.

"When senior management doesn't understand social media, they sometimes feel very comfortable handing over social-media management to interns or recent graduates," Philadelphia-based social-media strategist Alexandra Golaszewska told TechNewsDaily.

While the Jeep and Burger King Twitter hijacks were hilarious to many, such incidents can seriously harm a brand's relationship with its customers by showing that brand managers don't value the direct connections social media provides.

"If the decision makers don't use [social media] themselves, they might not understand the extent of its reach," Golaszewska said. "They don't always realize that even a deleted post can live forever in screen shots."

[The 10 Most Embarrassing Company Tweets]

Dismissive attitudes toward social media can lead to lax social-media security as well. High turnover and unclear social-media policies may result in many former interns and employees who still have keys to a company's social-media platforms.

No one has ever died from a hacked Twitter account or a disgruntled intern's rant on the corporate Facebook profile, but that doesn't mean these incidents don't have real-life consequences.

In the past couple of years, household names such as KitchenAid, Chrysler, Microsoft, Marc Jacobs and StubHub have had their Twitter accounts abused by employees who thought they were tweeting on their own personal accounts, or who used the corporate account to send offensive or brand-damaging messages to a larger audience.

It's not just companies that are at risk. Several celebrities, including Ashton Kutcher, Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears have had their accounts taken over by hackers who suddenly find themselves with an unearned audience of millions.

So how can an individual or company protect a Twitter account?

"In addition to creating a strong password, be sure to change your password often and always change it after someone leaves the company," said Rebecca Debono, social-media strategist at San Diego digital-marketing agency Digitaria. "You never know where former employees place old documents online or how easy their accounts are to hack."

"I always say to my clients, if you can remember your password, it is not cryptic enough," San Diego social-media expert and consultant Mari Smith told TechNewsDaily. "People need to do their homework and find a reliable system that stores passwords and gets them out of the habit of committing passwords to memory."

Smith recommends social-media scheduling tools such as HootSuite, which enables multiple people to tweet or post updates on a single account but doesn't allow users to make profile changes.

"Following these simple guidelines significantly reduces your likelihood of falling victim to a public hacking experience," Debono said.

[10 Tips for Staying Safe on Twitter]

Smith pointed out that if Twitter offered two-step authentication and strongly encouraged users ? especially high-profile celebrities and brands ? to enable it, account hijacks such as these would happen with less frequency.

(Twitter has said it is looking into adding two-step authentication, which would require users to log in with a password and a separate factor, such as a code text-messaged to a mobile phone.)

But OneID founder Steve Kirsch, whose service provides one username and password for multiple online accounts, disagrees.

Kirsch told tech news service ZDNet this week that even if Twitter offered two-step authentication, he doesn't believe it would be widely adopted.

"From a practical point of view, it would be like offering a feature that no one used," Kirsch said.

It's true that even the strongest passwords and authentication methods wouldn't have prevented a recent attack that resulted in the theft of 250,000 Twitter passwords.

In that case, hackers exploited a flaw in Oracle's Java browser plug-in to break into Twitter's employee network. (Twitter subsequently changed the passwords of all affected users.)

There's no panacea that will solve the complex security problems of navigating the corporate world on social media.

But companies may be doing themselves a disservice if they treat social media as a second-rate medium for communicating with their customers. As with any other customer-facing aspect of a business, image and control is everything.

Cypriot conservative romps to presidential victory

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriot conservative leader Nicos Anastasiades won an overwhelming victory in a presidential run-off election on Sunday, promising to quickly finalize a financial rescue to stave off the island's bankruptcy.

Eight months of inconclusive talks on a bailout package have turned tiny Cyprus into a big headache for the euro zone, triggering fears of a financial collapse which would reignite the bloc's debt crisis.

Anastasiades immediately pledged to hammer out a quick deal with foreign lenders and bring Cyprus closer to Europe, in a shift from the policies of the outgoing Communist government that first sought aid from Russia before turning to the EU.

"We want Europe on our side. We will be absolutely consistent and meet our promises. Cyprus belongs to Europe," Anastasiades told jubilant supporters waving Greek flags and blowing horns. "We will restore the credibility of Cyprus in Europe and internationally. I promise you."

A sea of Greek flags far outnumbered the few Cypriot flags at an indoor stadium where Anastasiades - whose party is proud of its members' ethnic Greek identity - spoke.

The 66-year-old lawyer, known for his no-nonsense style and hot temper, took 57.5 percent of the vote, 15 points ahead of his anti-austerity Communist-backed rival Stavros Malas.

The decisive outcome showed a clear mandate from Cypriots for an aggressive, pro-bailout approach to resolving the nation's financial quagmire, despite growing despondency over austerity measures that will have to accompany any such rescue.

"It's a triumph," said Stefanos Stefanou, a 62-year-old pensioner as he stood outside Anastasiades's campaign offices. "I won't have the fear of losing my pension and benefits now, along with what we earned after working for 40 years."

Financial markets had been hoping for an Anastasiades victory to speed up a joint rescue by the European Union and International Monetary Fund before the island runs out of cash and derails fragile confidence returning to the euro zone.

Virtually all rescue options - from a bailout loan to a debt writedown or slapping losses on bank depositors - are proving unpalatable because they push Cypriot debt to unmanageable levels or risk hurting investor sentiment elsewhere in the bloc.

German misgivings about the nation's commitment to fighting money-laundering and strong financial ties with Russia have further complicated the negotiations.

Anastasiades, a heavy smoker known for his no-nonsense style and who counts fellow conservative German Chancellor Angela Merkel among his contacts, has stressed his pro-European credentials stand him in better stead to seal a deal than the outgoing president, who is the EU's last Communist leader.

In a clear shift with the policies of his predecessor, Anastasiades said one of his first tasks would be to apply for Cypriot membership of the NATO-affiliated Partnership for Peace.

Cyprus's Communist government strongly objected to any NATO links, holding it responsible for what it says was a conspiracy to split the island in 1974.

"We need a government with weight that can talk to (EU) partners, that is cooperative, that can be heard and do what it pledges to do," Christopher Pissarides, a Cypriot who won the Nobel prize in economics in 2010 told Reuters.

"We hadn't been doing this until now. The most important thing is to signal our willingness to cooperate (with the EU)."

EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said he spoke to Anastasiades after the victory and assured him that the bloc was committed to helping Cyprus overcoming its problems.

SOUR NATIONAL MOOD

Anastasiades takes the reins of a Mediterranean nation ravaged by its worst economic crisis in four decades, with unemployment at a record high of 15 percent. Pay cuts and tax hikes ahead of a bailout have further soured the national mood.

His most immediate task will be to appoint a finance minister who can convince Europeans to agree a swift bailout. It is likely to be Michael Sarris, a widely respected former World Bank economist who ushered Cyprus into the euro zone in 2008 as finance minister under a centre-left government.

European officials want a bailout agreed by the end of March, ensuring no honeymoon period for the new president, who will be sworn in on February 28 and assume power on March 1.

Talks to rescue Nicosia have dragged on since June, after a Greek sovereign debt restructuring saddled its banks with losses. It is expected to need up to 17 billion euros in aid - about the size of its entire economy.

Anastasiades has suggested the island may even need a bridging loan to tide it over until a rescue is nailed down.

Turnout was lower than expected among the half a million Cypriots eligible to vote, with a 19 percent abstention rate blamed on despondency at the country's grim prospects.

Longstanding anger over the island's 40-year-old division into the Greek-speaking south and Turkish north has been relegated to a distant second behind the country's financial quagmire as an election issue this year.

"Cyprus has to move forward," said Marios, an 18-year-old army conscript who declined to give his last name for fear of violating army rules.

"We were prospering but in the last five years we started going backwards."

(AP) ? The Onion is apologizing for calling the 9-year-old star of "Beasts of the Southern Wild" a vulgar and offensive name on Twitter, an attack that led to a firestorm online.

The satirical newspaper on Sunday referred to Quvenzhane Wallis with an expletive intended to denigrate women. The Onion was lambasted overnight and asked for forgiveness Monday.

"It was crude and offensive ? not to mention inconsistent with The Onion's commitment to parody and satire, however biting," The Onion CEO Steve Hannah wrote on Facebook. "No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire."

Hannah said the offensive tweet was taken down within an hour and the newspaper has "instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures" to ensure it will never happen again. Those responsible would be disciplined, he added.

"Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry."

A message sent to Quvenzhane's representative seeking comment wasn't immediately returned Monday.

The Onion's original tweet brought some calls for the fake new organization to publicly identify the writer of the tweet, vows to refuse to retweet its material, and requests from outraged consumers to email The Onion to complain.

Oscar host Seth MacFarlane also joked about the young star during the ceremony. Some found the quip offensive, albeit not to the degree of the outrage over The Onion's tweet. MacFarlane joked that "it'll be 16 years before she's too old for" George Clooney.

Despite the attack, Quvenzhane had some reason to stay positive Sunday. By the time she'd arrived at the Oscar telecast, she could boast that she had been cast to play Annie in a contemporized adaptation of the Broadway musical and the "Little Orphan Annie" comic strip to be directed by Will Gluck.

It wasn't the first time The Onion has gotten into hot water for trying to push its humor. Last year, the site attracting public ire for an image that showed an airliner about to crash into Chicago's Willis Tower, the tallest building in the country.

And the year before, U.S. Capitol Police released a statement refuting tweets and an article claiming members of Congress had taken a group of schoolchildren hostage. It included a doctored picture of Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner holding a gun to a child's head.

The Chicago-based publication was founded in 1988 by two students in Madison from the University of Wisconsin. Starting as a local college newspaper, it became a national comedy institution and went online in 1996, and has since developed a television news parody.

The publication is distributed weekly in cities, but it has also embraced Twitter and has an app for the iPad and other tablets. It says it averages 40 million page views and roughly 7.5 million unique visitors per month.

Activist investors put climate-change issue up for vote at bank

Activist investors have succeeded for the first time in placing a shareholder resolution on the risks of greenhouse-gas emissions up for a vote at a major bank, a step toward making climate change an important consideration for corporations.

The resolution, which follows years of protests over banks financing certain coal operations, is to be included in proxy material being sent to shareholders of PNC Financial Services Group of Pittsburgh before the bank's April 23 annual meeting.

It asks PNC to assess and report back to shareholders on how its lending results in greenhouse gas emissions that can alter the climate, posing financial risks for its corporate borrowers and risks to its own reputation.

PNC is the only major bank based in Appalachia, a region where coal and gas extraction is a major business. It has long lent to mining companies, including those engaged in mountaintop removal, which involves blowing up peaks to reach coal seams below and has been blamed for degrading landscapes, destroying habitat and polluting streams.

In recent years, PNC has cultivated an environmentally friendly image, building energy-conserving branches, making loans for solar projects and offering incentives to small businesses to protect the environment.

The backers of the resolution said, however, that PNC had offered only vague responses to the risks posed by climate change. What's more, they said, the bank reneged on a promise made in 2011 not to extend credit to individual mountaintop removal projects or to mining companies that receive the bulk of their production from the controversial process.

"As a result, it is the focus of a consumer boycott," the shareholder resolution says, adding: "PNC has ignored investors' requests to provide information detailing its [mountaintop removal] policy implementation or the lending impacts of this policy."

PNC spokesman Frederick Solomon declined to comment on the resolution, saying the bank's board would respond in due time.

The sponsors of the resolution include Quaker and Roman Catholic groups and mutual funds focused on investments they deem to be socially responsible, including Domini Social Investments, Walden Asset Management and Boston Common Asset Management.

In the mid-2000s, the Securities and Exchange Commission excluded similar resolutions at banks and insurers, holding that they concerned "ordinary business" at the financial firms, said Meredith Benton, a portfolio manager at Boston Common.

But in 2010 the SEC issued guidance saying corporations should disclose to shareholders the potential effect of climate change on their business and their strategies for dealing with the risks. The agency said the issue had become a topic of intense public discussion and a target for national and international regulation.

As this year's annual meeting season approaches, numerous corporations have shareholder resolutions focusing on sustainability and climate change, along with hot-button social and environmental topics such as sexual orientation, lobbying and political contributions and genetically modified food ingredients.

But most other companies facing climate change resolutions this year are directly involved with carbon energy production: oil giants Chevron Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp. and coal producer Alpha Natural Resources Inc.

PNC had asked the SEC to bar the climate change resolution on grounds that lending and investing were part of its day-to-day business, but the SEC declined.

"In arriving at this position, we note that the proposal focuses on the significant policy issue of climate change," the SEC said in a letter to George P. Long III, PNC's chief governance lawyer. "Accordingly, we do not believe that PNC may omit the proposal from its proxy materials."

SEC spokesman John Nester said the decision does not mean every financial company must consider the issue of climate change. The ruling was based on the particular facts of PNC's case, he said, including the nature of the bank's lending criteria and public statements, which demonstrated a "meaningful relationship" between climate change and its operations.

Many activist stockholders have become less confrontational over the years, holding discussions with corporations over social and economic issues instead of filing shareholder resolutions, said Laura Berry, executive director of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility in New York.

The center, a 41-year-old coalition of activist investors, said its members have filed 180 shareholder resolutions while engaging in 225 "corporate dialogues" this proxy season.

"Filing a proposal can appear to be confrontational and can lead to all sorts of interactions ? some more effective than others," Berry said. "Withdrawing a proposal is often viewed as a sign progress is being made."

In the case of climate change and banks, that potentially could take place ? not at PNC but at JPMorgan Chase & Co., said Benton, the Boston Common portfolio manager.

The sponsors of the PNC resolution have proposed a similar shareholder vote at JPMorgan Chase but may withdraw it after discussions with a team of employees focused on climate change at the New York bank "who have real chops and are working on these issues," Benton said.

By contrast, she said, discussions with PNC turned up no evidence of a "holistic response" to climate change issues. And despite the bank's pledge to cut back lending for mountaintop removal projects, she said, "they haven't changed their practices in any way."

Gingrich: GOP failing to grasp new demographics

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says President Barack Obama and Democrats are "eight to 10 years ahead" of the Republican Party in understanding the rapidly changing face of the American electorate.

Gingrich tells "CBS This Morning" that GOP strategists have failed to respond effectively to the new demographic landscape.

Gingrich, who ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination last year, says poor strategy and questionable consulting last year cost the Republicans nine U.S. Senate seats that "we should have won."

He says, "You can't just be an opposition party. You have to be a party that has a better alternative."

Gingrich says Democrats have more readily adapted to a voting public that is "in many ways younger, more Latino, more African-American, than Republican strategists are capable of dealing with."

Twitter Serves 280 Lbs. Of Bacon A Week - Business Insider

Owen Thomas, Business Insider

Lance Holton, Twitter Executive Chef

We had the inestimable pleasure of meeting Twitter chef Lance Holton earlier this week.

Holton, better known as @birdfeeder, is just as funny and charming in person as he is in the short videos he posts via Twitter's Vine video-sharing app.

We're planning to go back to Twitter HQ for an in-depth look at Twitter's kitchen operations. But in the meantime, we thought we'd share with you this fun fact: Twitter goes through 280 pounds of bacon a week.

And Twitter?apparently has a bacon larder. You know, for the bacon.

Every day, the daily ration of bacon occupies a station in the Twitter cafeteria, which may explain Twitter employees' propensity to break into song and dance.

So 280 pounds of bacon sounds like a lot, until you divide it by 1,300 employees and realize that the bacon-starved employees of Twitter are consuming a mere three ounces of bacon a week.

Presumably the paleo-dieting, CrossFit-loving ultramarathoners at Twitter make up for the lack of bacon consumption by the vegetarian and vegan contingents.

Holton works for Bon App?tit Management Company, a Bay Area food-service company that also manages Google's caf?s.

He told Business Insider he sources Twitter's bacon through Del Monte Meat Co., an 87-year-old San Francisco firm, because it procures the pork from humane providers.

In conclusion:

Photos of Hugo Chavez shown after 2-month absence

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The world got its first glimpse of Hugo Chavez since he underwent a fourth cancer-related surgery in Cuba more than two months ago, with photos released Friday showing the Venezuelan leader alongside his daughters in Havana.

Along with Valentine's Day images of puffy-faced Chavez came a possible explanation for why no one has heard from Venezuela's longtime president since his surgery: He is breathing through a tracheal tube that makes speech difficult.

The government described Chavez's condition as "delicate" and said he continues to undergo "vigorous treatment for his fundamental illness."

The photos show Chavez reclining on what appears to be a bed, a blue pillow behind his head. He smiles broadly, while his daughters Rosa and Maria lean in close to him.

In other images, Chavez is shown looking at Thursday's issue of the Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma, his daughters still flanking him. Chavez's son-in-law, Science and Technology Minister Jorge Arreaza, showed the photos on Venezuelan state television.

Government officials say Chavez has been recovering in Cuba since undergoing cancer surgery on Dec. 11.

Speculation has been widespread in Venezuela about Chavez's condition, with the president not seen or directly heard from since he left for Cuba on Dec. 10. During previous treatments in Havana, Chavez spoke on Venezuelan TV or appeared in photos.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said Friday that the tracheal tube makes talking difficult for Chavez.

"After two months of a complicated post-operative process, the patient remains conscious, with his intellectual functions intact, in close communication with his government team," Villegas said, reading from a statement on television.

Villegas reiterated that Chavez has overcome a respiratory infection that arose after the surgery, "although a certain grade of (breathing) insufficiency persists."

"Given that circumstance, which is being duly treated, Comandante Chavez is currently breathing through a tracheal cannula, which temporarily hinders speech," Villegas said.

Villegas also said Chavez's doctors are "applying vigorous treatment for his fundamental illness," an apparent reference to cancer. He said that treatment "isn't free of complications."

Government opponents have been demanding more information about Chavez's condition, and have asked why he hasn't spoken to the nation to explain his condition.

Dr. Carlos Castro, scientific director of the Colombian League Against Cancer in Bogota, said that based on the government's accounts, Chavez appears to have been breathing with the help of a respirator for an extended period after the surgery.

"After some days, it's mandatory to perform a tracheotomy so that he can breathe," Castro said.

Castro, who isn't involved in the president's treatment, said Chavez's tracheotomy isn't visible in the photos because it is covered by his clothing, below the neck line. As for why Chavez needed the procedure, Castro said that when a patient is on a respirator for a long time, the "tube can damage the trachea because it, let's say, irritates. And they carry out the tracheotomy so that he can continue breathing without problems and preserve the trachea."

Castro also said that it's normal for a patient's face to swell up after being on a ventilator for a long time.

"They're not telling us anything about his 'fundamental illness,'" Castro said. "They don't touch that subject. So, the question is: What's happened with the cancer?"

Despite unanswered questions about Chavez's cancer, some of the president's supporters said they were surprised and relieved when they saw the pictures of him on television.

"Chavez looked good, smiling," said Juan Ramirez, a security guard in Caracas. "I didn't expect that."

Ramirez said he believes the images show the president is recovering and that Chavez may soon be ready to return to Venezuela.

Before leaving for Cuba, Chavez acknowledged there were risks and said that if his cancer fight prevented him from staying on as president, Vice President Nicolas Maduro should run in a new election to take his place.

Maduro has traveled repeatedly to Havana in recent weeks, and has shown documents signed by Chavez while insisting the president remains in charge. On Wednesday, Maduro said Chavez is undergoing "extremely complex and tough" treatments, which he didn't specify.

Arreaza on Friday described them as "palliative treatments" but didn't give details.

Medical experts consulted by The Associated Press have said the government's recent accounts of "systemic medical treatment" could mean various types of chemotherapy or drug treatments, depending on the type of cancer.

The 58-year-old president has been undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba on-and-off since June 2011. He has said he has had tumors removed from his pelvic region, and has also undergone prior rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Throughout the treatments, Chavez has not revealed the type of cancer or the location where tumors have been removed.

Castro said that based on the government's accounts, he thinks Chavez's cancer sounds terminal.

Villegas, however, urged Venezuelans to keep praying for Chavez.

"We trust... that Comandante Chavez will overcome these delicate circumstances sooner rather than later to accompany his nation in the path to new victories," Villegas said, finishing the statement saying: "Viva Chavez!"

Ring card girl doesn?t notice knocked out fighter (Video)

At MMA events, there is rarely anything to pay attention to besides the fight. It's not like an NBA game, where there are cheerleaders and mascot races and dance squads and staring at Derrick Rose's knee to will it towards healing. (Maybe that was just my last trip to an NBA game.) At fights, you watch fights, and maybe the big screen at bigger UFC or Bellator events.

The singularity of events means you really shouldn't miss a knockout. Even if you look down for a minute and miss the punch, you generally don't miss the fighter laying on the ground and medical staff tending to him. You don't miss it, unless you're this woman employed to be a ring card girl.

She just walks by the fighter on his back. It's really an incredible level of obliviousness. Thankfully, staff in the cage tells her the fight is over.

Thanks, With Leather.

Daily iPad App: Watchup is your personal video news station

Sometimes reading the news just doesn't jive with what you are doing. For those times, iPad owners can turn to Watchup, a video news aggregator that pulls content from the top news channels.

Watchup lets you create your own custom newscasts that you can watch when you have some free time at the breakfast table or during your evening commute. You can pick the length of the newscast and choose the duration that fits into your schedule. The app also lets you pick the channels that you want to add to your newscast and includes a handful of the best news sources in the business including CNN, WSJ, TED, TechCrunch and more. Watchup compiles the newscast for you at the same time each day, so your news will be ready and waiting for you when you need it.

When your newscast is ready to watch, all you have to do is press play and then sit back and enjoy the show. Watchup will stream the clips in succession, so you never have to touch your screen. Navigation controls lets you move forward and back through your newscast, which means you can skip the items you don't want to watch and review the ones you might have missed. The app also has social features that let you share the video clips via Facebook, Twitter or email. An AirPlay option lets you stream the newscast to your Apple TV.

Watchup has a beautiful UI and its performance has been flawless in the times that I have used it. You do need an Internet connection to play the clips in the newscast, which may be a hindrance to those who don't have a cellular capable iPad or a local WiFi connection.

Watchup is free in the iOS App Store. Give it a spin and let us know what you think about the app in the comments.

Online College Offers Academic Rigor At Bargain Prices

20 Top Masters Degrees For Big Data Analytics Professionals

20 Top Masters Degrees For Big Data Analytics Professionals

(click image for larger view and for slideshow) What if you, or your college age child, could earn a degree from a big-name university without the big-name sticker shock that goes with it?

Changing the formula for college affordability is the goal of the American Honors program created by startup Quad Learning. The idea is to combine the cost structure of a community college, and two years of courses taught online by community college professors, with a rigorous academic curriculum that sets students up to transfer into a traditional on-campus program at a respected four-year university.

Quad Learning has attracted more than $11 million in funding, including $3.4 million in seed financing and a $7.9 million Series A venture round announced this week.

"We think the most cost-effective way to a top-tier bachelor's degree is this two-plus-two path," said Phil Bronner, Quad's CEO and co-founder. Part of Quad's job is to establish relationships with four-year colleges who will agree to accept credits from the program, after reviewing its academic standards, he said. The pilot projects for the program are being run at the Community College of Spokane, in Wash., and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

[ Can building an associate's degree into an extended high school program better prepare students for high-tech careers? Read IBM-Backed High School Gets Obama Plaudits.]

Since American Honors just launched in 2011, it can't yet point to students who went on to successful four-year college careers, but it can show off a first few who have been accepted at places like Emerson College, Brigham Young University and the University of Oregon.

College students are graduating with an average debt of about $26,500, and those who attend a high-end institution can end up owing much more. Meanwhile, traditional universities are watching demographic and economic trends that could leave them with fewer students beating down their doors, willing and able to pay their full freight, Bronner said. "They need more pathways to enable middle, and even upper-income families, to still be able to afford their schools."

Quad's customers are the community colleges, who hire it to manage the online learning environment, which Bronner describes as "more like Facebook than a traditional [learning management system] such as Blackboard." The environment for classroom discussions resembles Google Hangouts, where students can not only see the professor and onscreen course materials, but see and interact with other students. Courses follow the "flipped classroom" model, where instead of getting an information dump in the form of a lecture, students can view presentations and download notes in advance. Classroom time can then focus more on discussion of the material.

Online education is not necessarily a prerequisite for the two-plus-two business model -- and on-campus honors programs aimed at transitioning students to bachelor's programs are nothing new at community colleges -- but online instruction happens to meet the needs of many students who are attracted to this option, Bonner said. They tend to be interested in "a high-quality program that allows them to stay at home," he said, often for family or financial reasons, or because they want a little more time to mature before heading off to college. These are not necessarily marginal students, either -- Bonner counts valedictorians and a couple of students with perfect math SAT scores among the pilot project participants.

These are also students who have grown up with the Internet and are "as comfortable online, or in some cases, more comfortable online, than in person," Bonner said.

In which case, wouldn't this seem to set them up to transfer into a four-year online education program? Not necessarily, Bonner said. "They may want to have their two years on campus, or they may have saved up enough to go on to a master's degree."

If either of those things happen, American Honors will have opened up greater opportunities for these students at a bargain cost.
