Bright Lights, Old iMacs

Even with their outdated CRT displays, Apple's old rainbow assortment of iMacs are just too damn adorable to toss. But what do you do if you have a few still lying around taking up desk space? If you're Toronto-based travel and tour company G Adventures, you swap their heavy guts for bulbs and string them up in your offices as pendant lights. More »

Carson PalmerAP

When owners and teams treat football like a business, media and fans shrug.? When players do, it?s regarded as an affront to the integrity of the game.

It?s not fair, but that?s the way it is.? And Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer needs to brace himself for that reaction as he tries to force his way out of Oakland.

It?s obvious Palmer wants out.? Two years ago, he finagled his exit from Cincinnati by feigning retirement.? The strategy looked to be a failure until Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell broke his collarbone and former Raiders coach Hue Jackson lost his damn mind, giving up a first-round pick and a second-round pick for a quarterback who isn?t the guy he used to be.

Now, Palmer is turning up his nose at $10 million from the Raiders, which sets the stage for the Raiders eventually to cut him ? and for Palmer to play for someone else.

As Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports explains it, Palmer wants to play for a contender, even if it means being a backup.? (Cough . . . Seahawks and Pete Carroll . . . cough.)? Of course, Palmer won?t get $10 million to be a backup, but his willingness to walk away from football in order to get out of Cincinnati proves that he?d be willing to walk away from $10 million in order to get a shot at winning.

Palmer?s posture also reflects a belief that, despite the hiring of G.M. Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen, Palmer doesn?t see the silver-and-black bus getting turned around in the immediate future.? Otherwise, he?d gladly take $10 million to stay put.

The problem is that the Raiders currently hold all the cards.? With no seven-figure trigger in Palmer?s deal, the $13 million doesn?t become fully guaranteed until Week One, which means the Raiders can cut him much later in the offseason, if they draft a quarterback early ? or if they eventually decide Terrelle Pryor can get the job done.? The only risk the Raiders are taking is that, if Palmer drops a dumbbell on his foot or pops an Achilles tendon in offseason conditioning drills or otherwise suffers a season-ending injury while on the clock, the Raiders will owe Palmer his full salary.

That could set the stage for a Steve McNair-style lockout.? Even without Palmer being barred from the building (which would violate the CBA), Palmer is making his second power play in two years.

When a team does it, we applaud.? Fair or not, Palmer should prepare for the jeers and the boos and the accusations of being a chronic quitter.

Letter | Parks & Rec senior golf is good exercise, fun - Mercer Island ...

I?m writing to inform the people on Mercer Island of a wonderful senior golf program sponsored by the Parks and Recreation department. This program is for those wanting to play 9 or 18 holes. We depart every Monday (except holidays), April through October, with transportation provided and all tee times and schedules included.

A friend encouraged me to join though I?d never played the game, but at 82+ gathering all my equipment at the Mercer Island Thrift Shop (in case I was a dud), I hadn?t much outlay! I?ve put in eight-plus years. It?s great company, wonderful scenery, great lunches after 9 holes. So come on ? give it a try; you?ll be glad you did. Call 275-7609 and check it out.

Power Players: Same-sex marriage could help reduce the deficit

BOTTOM LINE

This week the Supreme Court heard arguments in two landmark cases regarding same-sex marriage: Hollingsworth v. Perry, which deals with California's Proposition 8, and the United States v. Windsor, which deals with the Defense of Marriage Act. The court likely won't hand down a ruling in these cases for several months, but many of you had questions about the legal and economic implications of both cases and of course, about the potential outcomes.

Donna Lynn Lewis wrote in on Facebook: My friend argues that it would somehow hurt the economy as far as benefits or social security, this doesn't make sense to me. Maybe you could explain what the financial effect would be for our society?

Ebersole Hughes Co. asked: Wondering if SCOTUS refuses to hear the prop 8 case or "tables" it- is same-sex marriage legal again in California?

And Kitty Cole tweeted: What's your gut feeling on how the SCOTUS will rule?

Thanks for your great questions, and please keep them coming on Twitter and on Facebook. We'll talk a lot more about the hearings and the shifting tide on same-sex marriage in America on "This Week" on Sunday. Be sure to tune in, and don't forget to watch "Good Morning America" tomorrow morning as well.

A look at RIM's much-delayed BlackBerry 10

Research In Motion Ltd. offered a glimpse Thursday at how its new BlackBerry 10 phones have been selling in Canada and abroad. Details on the U.S. are not expected for another three months.

The BlackBerry 10 is widely considered crucial to the company's future. RIM faced several delays getting phones with the software out. The delay could make it even harder for RIM to regain market share lost to Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android operating software.

Here's a look at developments surrounding the BlackBerry 10 in recent months:

Oct. 18, 2011: RIM unveils a new operating system, combining existing BlackBerry elements with RIM's previously announced QNX operating system for phones and tablet computers.

Dec. 6: RIM says "BlackBerry 10" will be the new name for its next-generation system after the company loses a trademark ruling on its previous name, BBX.

Dec. 15: RIM says new phones running BlackBerry 10 won't be out until late 2012, instead of early 2012 as previously expected. The company says the phones will need a highly integrated chipset that won't be available until mid-2012, so the company can now expect the new phones to ship late in the year.

May 1, 2012: RIM unveils a newly designed smartphone prototype powered by BlackBerry 10. The prototype BlackBerry has a touch screen, but no physical keyboard like most BlackBerry models. No update is given on the new system's launch date.

May 2: Company stresses that while the prototype has no physical keyboard, RIM will continue to make some models with one.

June 21: Company says the first BlackBerry device running BlackBerry 10 will not have a physical keyboard, only a touch-screen one. Ones with hard keyboards will eventually be made, but the company declines to say when.

June 28: RIM says it's delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. CEO Thorsten Heins says RIM's top priority is a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys. He adds, "I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers. There will be no compromise on this issue."

July 10: At its annual shareholders meeting, Heins asks disgruntled investors for patience as it develops BlackBerry 10. He says the product's quality is more important than rushing out the software, and he says some telecom carriers prefer a 2013 launch because next-generation wireless networks will be more widely operational by then.

Aug. 23: RIM says it has begun showing its new BlackBerry smartphones to wireless carriers around the world, but it remains "months and months" away from starting to sell them. The company says feedback from those carriers has been positive, and it will begin to discuss product launches and other business aspects with the carriers soon.

Sept. 25: Heins promises to restore the BlackBerry phone's stature as a trailblazing device even as many investors fret about its potential demise. Heins speaks at a conference for mobile applications developers to rally support for BlackBerry 10.

Oct. 31: RIM says its BlackBerry 10 smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world. The company calls it a key step.

Nov. 12: RIM says it will hold an official launch event for BlackBerry 10 smartphones on Jan. 30.

Nov. 13: RIM says the phones will be released "not too long" after the launch event.

Nov. 29: RIM's stock rises after Goldman Sachs upgraded the company's shares, saying there's a "30 percent chance" that BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be a success.

Dec. 13: RIM says the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency will launch a pilot program with its smartphones using BlackBerry 10.

Jan. 30, 2013: RIM kicks off new BlackBerry 10 with events in New York and elsewhere. It unveils the first two phones ? the Z10, with a touch-screen keyboard, and the Q10, with a physical keyboard as well. RIM also says it will change the company's name to BlackBerry.

Jan. 31: The Z10 model goes on sale in the U.K.

Feb. 4: RIM's CEO says early signs show that sales in the U.K. are strong, with many buyers switching from other systems rather than upgrading from older BlackBerrys. He narrows the Z10 launch in the U.S. to mid-March and says the Q10 model might not be available in the U.S. for another eight to 10 weeks, even though some wireless providers elsewhere should get it in April.

Feb. 5: The Z10 model goes on sale in Canada.

Thursday: RIM announces that it sold 1 million BlackBerry 10 phones in the quarter that ended March 2, above the 915,000 that analysts were expecting. Details on U.S. sales are not part of the results because the Z10 became available there after the quarter ended. But RIM lost about 3 million subscribers to end the quarter with 76 million. It's the second consecutive quarterly decline for RIM, whose subscriber based peaked at 80 million last summer.

BlackBerry targeted by short sellers as market awaits results

By Euan Rocha

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry's share price has more than doubled over the last six months as buzz around its new smartphones has boosted investor confidence, but some traders are betting big that talk of a turnaround is over-hyped.

Nasdaq data released on Tuesday shows that short interest in the stock is at record levels and has more than doubled over the course of the last year.

With BlackBerry due to report quarterly results in two days, giving investors their first official clues on demand for its new Z10 touchscreen device, that buildup of bearish bets could send the stock price surging if the company delivers a positive surprise.

BlackBerry, a one-time pioneer in the smartphone market, hopes the device - powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system - and other devices soon to follow will turn its fortunes around and help it to win back market share in an ultra-competitive sector. But many traders are clearly unconvinced.

Short interest in BlackBerry's Nasdaq-listed stock has risen to more than 155 million shares, up from 136.5 million shares a month ago and 60 million at this time last year.

Traders who sell securities "short" borrow shares and then sell them in the hope that the price will fall, so they can buy them back more cheaply, return them to the lender and pocket the difference.

Markit, a financial information services company, said in a report last week that positive reviews around the Z10 have thus far failed to impress short sellers, with demand to borrow shares in BlackBerry hovering at record levels.

The firm, which collects data from custodian banks that run lending programs on behalf of investors who sometimes put their holdings into such programs, notes that roughly three-quarters of the BlackBerry shares that can be borrowed are already out on loan, meaning that it would be difficult and expensive to short any more of the company's shares at this time.

The number of short positions indicates that over 30 percent of BlackBerry's free float is currently being shorted, up from about 11 percent at this time last year.

The bearish data comes close on the heels of analysts' and media reports that the Z10 device had a rather muted launch in the United States last week.

SHORT SQUEEZE EYED

BlackBerry is hoping that the Z10 and other new devices powered by its new operating system will help it to regain ground ceded to rivals such as Apple Inc's iPhone, as well as Samsung Electronics Co's Galaxy line and other devices powered by Google Inc's market-leading Android operating system.

BlackBerry's results this week will, however, only provide investors with limited insight on demand for the Z10, which was on sale during just the final month of the latest quarter. And although the Z10 is now available in more than 25 countries, it initially went on sale only in the United Kingdom and Canada.

BlackBerry's volatile stock is nevertheless likely to swing wildly following the results on Thursday, as analysts and investors read into the numbers and extrapolate broader sales trends for the new device across the rest of the globe.

The company's stock, which closed at $14.46 on Tuesday on the Nasdaq, has already dropped roughly 10 percent since Friday after the reports of the Z10's lackluster U.S. launch.

The recent pullback in the stock ahead of results, however, may not be all bad news for those investors hoping for a big turnaround in the company's fortunes, as any positive outlook or data points from the company on Thursday would raise the prospects of a short squeeze in the stock.

In that scenario, bearish traders that sold the stock short would be forced to buy shares to avoid big losses on their positions - something that only serves to work against short sellers and push a stock higher.

Eric Jackson, the founder and managing partner of Ironfire Capital LLC, believes the size of the short position in the stock may serve as a big catalyst for BlackBerry's share price, if the company provides investors with an upbeat forecast.

"Even if they report a so-so quarter ... if they provide robust guidance for the current quarter, that could really light a fire under the stock," said Jackson, whose firm owns shares in BlackBerry.

Egypt raises customs on luxury imports

(AP) ? Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi hiked customs rates on dozens of "non-essential" imports as part of the government's efforts to increase revenues to revive the ailing economy.

Morsi's decree issued late Sunday raises tariffs on a wide range of luxury goods including shrimp, gambling tables, sunglasses, nuts, and fireworks.

Egypt's economy has been hit hard by the instability that followed the 2011 uprising that forced longtime autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak from power, particularly the vital tourism sector.

The government is currently engaged in talks with the International Monetary Fund to secure a $4.8 billion loan, which would help attract other international lenders and reassure foreign investors.

The conditions for the loan have not been made public, but Morsi's government has been pushing an austerity plan that would cut subsidies and raise taxes to shrink the budget deficit from its current level of almost 11 percent. His government had initially aimed at 8.5 percent but is now suggesting it could be 9.5 percent.

Talks with the IMF were delayed in December when violent protests erupted and the president was forced to rescind his austerity plan. Some in the opposition and the business community have called for a national dialogue on the proposals to win public consent before any austerity measures are introduced.

Egypt had long been viewed as a stable corner of the Middle East. Reserves stood at around $36 billion just before Mubarak was toppled.

The past two years of political upheaval, however, have kept investors from returning and have curtailed tourism, a foreign currency earner. Foreign currency reserves were slashed by more than two-thirds following the uprising, dipping to a critical level of $13.5 billion this year.

One way Egypt is seeking funds is through the return of millions of dollars earned under rampant corruption during Mubarak's nearly three decade-long rule. Members of the Muslim Brotherhood group, from which the president hails, have spoken out in support of striking deals with former regime figures.

Aggies and Cornhuskers meet in NCAA second round

By KRISTIE RIEKEN
AP Sports Writer

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M has moved on to the Southeastern Conference, and Nebraska is a part of the Big 10.

The Aggies and Cornhuskers will hold a Big 12 reunion Monday night when the former conference foes meet in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Nebraska and A&M competed against each other for years in the Big 12 before the Cornhuskers made the jump to the Big 10 in 2011. The Aggies left the conference for the SEC this season.

No. 3 Texas A&M beat Wichita State in the first round and sixth-seeded Nebraska rallied to knock off Chattanooga.

The Aggies won the national title in 2011, and advanced to the round of 16 last season. Nebraska is looking to get there for first time since 2010.

Shinseki says VA on target for ending backlog

(AP) ? Although the number of pending veterans' disability claims keep soaring, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki on Sunday said he's committed to ending the backlog in 2015 by replacing paper with electronic records.

Veterans receive disability compensation for injuries or illness incurred during their active military service. About 600,000 claims, or 70 percent, are considered backlogged. The number of claims pending for more than 125 days has nearly quadrupled under Shinseki's watch.

Shinseki told CNN's "State of the Union" that a decade of war and efforts to make it easier for veterans to collect compensation for certain illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder have driven the backlog higher during his tenure. He said that doing away with paper records will be the key to a turnaround.

Shinseki said that the VA has puts its new computer system in place in 20 regional offices around the country and all regional offices will be on the system by the end of the year.

"This has been decades in the making, 10 years of war. We're in paper, we need to get out of paper," Shinseki said. The Defense Department and other agencies still file paper claims, he said, but "we have commitments that in 2014 we will be electronically processing our data and sharing it."

Congressional committees have held two hearings on the disability claims bottleneck in the past two weeks. Lawmakers voiced growing frustration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"There are many people, including myself, who are losing patience as we continue to hear the same excuses from VA about increased workload and increased complexity of claims," Florida's Rep. Jeff Miller, the Republican chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs, said during a hearing on Wednesday.

"No veteran should have to wait for claims. If there's anybody impatient here, I am that individual and we're pushing hard," said Shinseki, the former four-star Army general who became VA secretary when President Barack Obama came into office.

About 4.3 million veterans and survivors receive disability benefits. Most veterans whose claims are backlogged, about 60 percent, are getting some disability compensation already and have filed for additional benefits for other injuries or illnesses.

Tom Tarantino, chief policy officer of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said a presidential commission was needed to bring greater emphasis to solving the problem and to make sure all federal agencies were on the same page.

"We're tired of waiting for the VA to get their act together," Tarantino said.

Peter Gaytan, executive director of the American Legion, emphasized that resolving disability claims in a timely manner is an issue his organization has dealt with for decades.

Other stomach microbiota modulate resistance to H. pylori-driven ulcers

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Mice with different naturally occurring stomach bacteria have distinct susceptibilities to disease caused by Helicobacter pylori, the well-known cause of ulcers in humans, according to a study published online ahead of print in the journal Infection and Immunity. This is the first study to document (in mice) that the presence of certain bacteria in the stomach microbiota can prevent pathology from H. pylori.

The gastro-intestinal tract is a veritable ecosystem packed with microbes, and over the last decade, investigators have been discovering that the species composition of that ecosystem can have a profound effect on human health. But the eureka moment that led to this study came "when we realized that mice from different vendors mount different responses to H. pylori infection," says principal investigator Karen Ottemann of the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Following this discovery, the researchers divided mice from the vendor, Taconic Farms, into three groups: mice treated with antibiotics in order to kill some of the resident bacteria, mice that were fed normal stomach bacteria after antibiotic treatment, and mice that were not treated. They then infected each group with H. pylori, and assayed the animals' stomachs for immune system cells.

"The antibiotic-treated mice had small quantities of particular inflammatory cells, called Th1 T helper cells," says Ottemann. Both the untreated mice, and the treated mice that were then fed normal stomach bacteria had normal (higher) levels of Th1 T helper cells. These results suggested that the normal stomach microbes contribute to disease caused by H. pylori, says Ottemann.

The researchers then determined that around 4,000 species of bacteria were different in the high- and low-inflammation (no antibiotics, and antibiotic-treated, respectively) mice. Notably, the mice with low inflammation "had elevated amounts of Clostridia, bacteria known to prevent inflammation in the intestine," says Ottemann. Thus, the Clostridia may be key to dampening H. pylori pathology, although that remains to be determined, she says.

Ottemann says that this research may lead to predicting future H. pylori disease, including ulcers and gastric cancer -- which has few treatment options and high mortality -- based on stomach microbiota.

"After we determine which microbes underlie H. pylori disease outcomes, we could test whether H. pylori-infected people harbor those particular bacteria, and target them for curing," says Ottemann. Alternatively, such people could receive the protective bacteria as probiotics. The latter might be a superior option, because while prone to ulcers in middle and advanced age, people who harbor H. pylori are less likely to get esophageal cancer and asthma.

KABUL (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry embarked on talks Monday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai amid concerns Karzai may be jeopardizing progress in the war against extremism with his anti-American rhetoric. The session came shortly after the U.S. military ceded control of its last detention facility in Afghanistan, ending a longstanding irritant in relations.

During Kerry's 24-hour visit to the country ? his sixth since President Barack Obama became president but his first as Obama's secretary of State ? Kerry planned to meet with Karzai, civic leaders and others to discuss continued U.S. assistance to the country and how to wean it from such aid as the international military operation winds down, and upcoming national elections.

Karzai has infuriated U.S. officials by accusing Washington of colluding with Taliban insurgents to keep Afghanistan weak even as the Obama administration presses ahead with plans to hand off security responsibility to Afghan forces and end NATO's combat mission by the end of next year.

U.S. officials accompanying Kerry said he did not plan to lecture Karzai or dwell on the apparent animosity but would make clear once again that the U.S. did not take such allegations lightly, They said he would press Karzai on the need for the April 2014 elections to meet international standards and continue to stress the importance of Afghan reconciliation and U.S. support for a Taliban office in Qatar where talks could occur.

Karzai is expected to travel to Qatar within the week and some movement on the opening of an office is likely then.

Kerry, who arrived in Kabul from Amman, Jordan, had hoped also to travel to Pakistan on his trip to the region but put it off due to elections there. Instead, he met late Sunday in Amman with Pakistani army chief for Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, officials said.

The pair had a private dinner at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Jordan as Pakistan continued to seethe in the aftermath of the return from exile to the country of former president Pervez Musharraf, himself a former army chief.

Earlier Monday, the U.S. military ceded control of the Parwan last detention facility near the U.S.-run Bagram military base north of Kabul, a year after the two sides initially agreed on the transfer. Karzai demanded control of Parwan as a matter of national sovereignty.

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Joseph Dunford, handed over Parwan at a ceremony there after signing an agreement with Afghan Defense Minister Bismullah Khan Mohammadi. "This ceremony highlights an increasingly confident, capable and sovereign Afghanistan," Dunford said.

The dispute over the center threw a pall over the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral security agreement that would govern the presence of U.S. forces in Afghanistan after 2014.

An initial agreement to hand over Parwan was signed a year ago, but efforts to follow through on it constantly stumbled over American concerns that the Afghan government would release prisoners that it considered dangerous.

They have reason to worry. Zakir Qayyum ? a former Guantanamo detainee, was released into Afghan custody in 2007. He was freed four months later and rejoined the Taliban. He has reportedly risen to become the No. 2 in the Taliban.

A key hurdle was a ruling by an Afghan judicial panel holding that administrative detention, the practice of holding someone without formal charges, violated the country's laws. The U.S. argued that international law allowed administrative detentions and also argued that it could not risk the passage of some high-value detainees to the notoriously corrupt Afghan court system.

An initial deadline for the full handover passed last September and another earlier this month.

The detention center houses about 3,000 prisoners and the majority are already under Afghan control. The United States had not handed over about 100, and some of those under American authority do not have the right to a trial because the U.S. considers them part of an ongoing conflict.

There are also about three dozen non-Afghan detainees, including Pakistanis and other nationals that will remain in American hands. The exact number and nationality of those detainees has never been made public.

A new agreement, or memorandum of understanding, was signed at the ceremony by Dunford and Khan, but the U.S. military said it will not be made public. The agreement supplants one signed last March, which had been made public.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the new agreement "affirms their mutual commitment to the lawful and humane treatment of detainees and their intention to protect the people of Afghanistan and coalition forces," an apparent reference to the release of detainees deemed to be dangerous.

There are about 100,000 coalition troops in Afghanistan, including about 66,000 from the United States. American officials have made no final decision on how many troops might remain in Afghanistan after 2014, although they have said as many as many as 12,000 U.S. and coalition forces could remain.

The U.S. started to hold detainees at Bagram Air Field in early 2002. For several years, prisoners were kept at a former Soviet aircraft machine plant converted into a lockup.

In 2009, the U.S. opened a new detention facility next door. The number of detainees incarcerated at that prison, renamed the Parwan Detention Facility, went from about 1,100 in September 2010 to more than 3,000.

After Monday's handover, it was renamed the Afghan National Detention Facility at Parwan and the U.S. military said it would provide the Afghan army with advisers and $39 million in funding.

The United States has spent about a quarter of a billion dollars to build the Bagram facility along with Kabul's main prison located in the capital.

Growth Hedge Fund Shakeups: Ford (F), Delta (DAL) And More

Be sure to check out our detailed stock analysis (click here).Ken Heebner is the co-founder of Capital Growth Management, a money management firm with more than $6 billion under management. The hedge fund is growth-oriented and founded by Heebner in 1990. Capital Growth on average has a 17.2% return rate against the 12.8% of index, and of late the fund has been been making bets on the airlines.

Capital Growth's New Picks

A couple of Capital Growth's new picks includes those from the airline industry, Delta Air Lines, Inc. (NYSE: DAL) and United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE: UAL). Delta is now Capital Growth's ninth largest holding, and United Continental is 19th (see Jim Cramer's thoughts on airlines). The recent consolidation of the industry, with the merger of U.S. Airways and American, leaves three major airlines, which should bode well for the remaining operators. In particular, the consolidation should lead to pricing power and higher revenue per seat.

Delta has managed to see impressive operating efficiencies and expects margin expansion of 2.5% to 4.5% for the March-ending quarter. Delta has been performing well across the board, with luggage misses falling 25% and customer complaints down 40% last quarter on a year over year basis. As far as longer-term growth, one of Delta's key moves has been the acquisition of a 49% stake in the British carrier Virgin Atlantic. The big "win" for Delta related to the acquisition includes the fact that Delta will now have greater access to the New York - London route. London's Heathrow airport is one of the busiest in the world and Delta Air Lines has only 0.3% of the slots at the airport, but Virgin has 3.3%.

United Continental was another one of Capital Growth's airline picks. United has some of the top unit revenue growth, and has been focusing on improving its products and in-flight features to help with differentiation. This includes having already installed economy plus seats on 91% of its fleet and embarking on new initiatives that include expanding its global routes. The airline plans to add international destinations that include Taiwan; Ireland, Paris and various Canadian locations, not to mention the first-ever nonstop Denver - Tokyo service.

Both Delta and United may also be the cheapest airlines in the industry:

Price to earnings (forward estimates)

  • Delta 5 times
  • United Continental 6 times
  • Southwest Airlines 10 times
  • Jetblue 10 times
  • Alaska Air 10 times

Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY)w as also another new position, with Capital Growth buying up 2.6 million shares and putting the timber REIT as its 22nd largest holding (read about the timber outlook). Weyerhaeuser is a somewhat diversified REIT, deriving 43% of revenues from wood products (lumber, plywood, etc.), 26% from fibers (pulp), 15% from timberlands (land) and 15% from real estate (housing and residential development). The timber REIT has an impressive asset base, and driving future performance should be a turnaround in the U.S. housing market and a greater demand for timber exports. Related to the U.S turnaround, S&P expects residential construction to recover nicely in 2013, with housing starts expected to be up 27%.

Capital Growth's Selloffs

As far as bearish signs, Capital Growth sold off shares of two major car makers, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) and General Motors Company (NYSE: GM). The firm sold off all of its GM shares and downsized its Ford shares by 32%. I don't necessarily agree with Capital Growth's sell offs and believe there are reasons to buy both stocks. For one, Ford expects industry volume of 15 million to 16 million unit sales in the U.S. for 2013, compared to the 14.8 million in 2012. The car company is also expecting gains in market share for its U.S. and China operations; its current U.S. market share is 15% in the U.S. and only 3% in China. Beside growth in China, Ford plans to focus on the highly populous country of India by boosting exports of its engine production and manufacturing in India and then embarking on plans to ship from India to Europe. Ford also pays a near 3% dividend yield that is sometimes overlooked (read about Ford's great dividend).

GM is another top car maker. The company has some $18 billion in cash, with total debt of only $16.0 billion. North American market share is just one of GM's focuses, but the company does plan to boost market share and increase prices in the region over the next few years. This includes upping its profit margins from 8% to 10% for the region over the next three years. The margin expansion is expected to be a result of its investments in Cadillac, which it hopes to bring to the forefront as a premier brand.

With Ford's plans to look to China and India for growth, GM is following suit. GM has a joint venture with SAIC for opening its second plant in the Guangxi province for manufacturing the only-in-China brand Baojun, which will be able to produce some 400,000 vehicles annually. GM also has a joint venture with SAIC, of which it owns 93%, that will launch several light commercial vehicles in the Indian car market. GM's India operations will also export vehicles to other markets, including South America and South East Asia (see how the car makers are doing in China so far).

As far as GM and Ford go, both still trade much cheaper than their overseas counterparts:

Price to Earnings

  • Ford 9 times
  • GM 9.5 times
  • Toyota 19 times
  • Honda 17 times

Don't Be Fooled

Capital Growth focuses on growth-storied stocks. It appears that they believe the airline industry has impressive growth ahead, namely Delta and United. As well, a leading timber REIT, Weyerhaeuser, should also grow nicely on the back of a rebounding U.S. housing and real estate recovery. Meanwhile, it appears Capital Growth no longer sees the top U.S. car makers, Ford and GM, as growth stories. Yet, I believe both of these stocks could still reward shareholders over the interim. The growth prospects for the car industry might not be as robust as the airline industry, but I think Ford and GM have the advantage of being value plays, trading well below their Japanese counterparts

Tilda Swinton Sleeps In A Glass Box At The Museum Of Modern Art

Ah, the wonders of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Van Gogh, Picasso, Tilda Swinton sleeping in a box...

What's that? Yes, the eccentric 52-year-old actress, known for her roles in films such as "Michael Clayton" and "We Need to Talk About Kevin," surprised museum patrons Saturday by appearing in an exhibit called "The Maybe, in which, the New York Daily News reports, she "slept on an unadorned white pallet in a transparent display case."

According to Gothamist, which has photos of the exhibit, the actress will be appearing sporadically all year. "Tilda Swinton will be doing unannounced, random performance art pieces sleeping in a glass box in the museum," a source told the site. "Today is the first performance. Each performance lasts the whole day the museum is open."

The MoMA said in a statement:

?An integral part of The Maybe's incarnation at MoMA in 2013 is that there is no published schedule for its appearance, no artist's statement released, no no museum statement beyond this brief context, no public profile or image issued. Those who find it chance upon it for themselves, live and in real?shared?time: now we see it, now we don't.?

Swinton debuted "The Maybe," a collaboration with artist Cornelia Parker, in 1995 in London, and later reprised it in Rome.

Facebook Hires David Weekly For Platform - Business Insider

Facebook just dropped a love bomb on the app developers who play a crucial role in the social network's health, yet whose relationship with it is often fraught with tension.

The tension reliever's name is David Weekly, who starts work on Monday on the Facebook Platform team. That group runs the tools which allows third-party developers to access the social network for their own apps ? like friends' lists and ?posts on the News Feed ? and oversees Facebook's relationships with those developers.

Weekly is a startup founder who's known for organizing coding festivals and creating Hacker Dojo, a sort of community center for developers in Mountain View, Calif.

A friendly acquire-hire deal

Weekly most recently ran a startup, Gaston Labs, whose main product was Ohana, a service for creating photo newsletters. Ohana is shutting down, and Weekly and a co-founder, Nathan Schmidt, are joining Facebook. (A third co-founder, Tamiko Rast, is not joining Facebook.)

Here's how the Ohana team described it in an email:

In the process of thinking about how best to facilitate sharing we?ended up in discussions with Facebook and we're excited to announce?we're joining Facebook starting Monday the 25th. Consequently, we'll?be winding down the service in the next few weeks.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed that it had hired Weekly and Schmidt: "The talent behind Gaston Labs has a long history of building great social products and a passion for working with developers We're excited for them to join Facebook and look forward to seeing what they will accomplish."

Facebook is not acquiring the company.

That makes the deal what's known in Silicon Valley as an "acquire-hire." Those transactions can take many forms but generally happen because a larger company wants to absorb some or all of a startup's employees, with or without buying their company.?

It's a bit of a letdown for fans of what Business Insider named one of the 25 hottest startups in Silicon Valley a year ago, largely on the strength of Weekly and Schmidt's resumes. The pair previously co-founded PBworks, a group-collaboration service.

Weekly, who's known for his self-deprecating wit, posted a Dilbert cartoon on Facebook just last week which made fun of acquire-hire deals. (His thought-provoking essay on why startups are dumb, and that's actually a good thing, is also a must-read.)

Why Facebook needs to restore its romance with developers

How Facebook snapped up Weekly isn't the key question, though: it's what he must do now for the social network.

While Facebook has had several talented executives running its platform efforts, not since Dave Morin, an early Facebook employee who's now CEO of Path, left the company three years ago has it had such a charismatic figure who's likely to be seen by developers as one of their own.

In its early days, the Facebook platform was seen as a level playing field for app developers. Now, many?developers are frustrated by Facebook's ever-changing policies.?

Facebook is blocking services it deems competitive from accessing features like users' lists of friends ? a trend that began with Twitter, back in 2010. More recently, Facebook?cut off a social search service from Russian search engine Yandex; Vine, a video-sharing app from Twitter; and MessageMe, a messaging app.

Facebook has also changed the frequency and prominence with which updates posted by apps appear in users' feeds and profiles. Zynga was hard-hit last year when Facebook altered its algorithms, though other makers of social games managed to ride out the changes. As a result, Zynga is pulling away from Facebook.

And Facebook has even cut back on F8, its quasi-annual conference for developers it launched along with the Facebook platform in 2007. None was held last year, and no date has been announced for a new one. (Facebook has continued to hold smaller events and send personnel to?attend industry events.)

As mobile-device usage grows, app developers have gained more options for distribution. On the desktop, Facebook had no real challenger which could deliver anywhere near the level of user signups and traffic it could to apps that chose its platform. But Apple's App Store and Google Play offer new channels for acquiring users.

Facebook's best hope in mobile is to court developers, pushing mobile-app installations through its App Center, a curated directory of Facebook-linked services, and ads which encourage users to download apps. Indeed, many of Facebook's own events now focus specifically on mobile developers.

Against this backdrop, Weekly has a big challenge. But the gregarious and hyper-connected Weekly seems like the perfect person to win friends for Facebook.

Energy Drinks-- Good or Bad? - Affordable Health Insurance Blog

Energy drinks have become very popular among high school and college students, often replacing sodas as a source of energy, especially high-caffeine drinks like Mountain Dew and Coke. There are several different ways of looking at energy drinks, and each person needs to evaluate whether they are good or bad for them based on the contents.

Energy drinks comes in many names such as Monster, Red Bull, Full Throttle, Rock Star, and Burn. Red Bull and Monster lead the pack with 79 percent of the market. So, what's in these energy drinks? Unlike coffee whose stimulant is caffeine, energy drinks can contain caffeine or other stimulants like guarana. Guarana is a plant in the maple family with large leaves and flowers. The seeds from the flowers produce the guarana which is twice as potent as the caffeine found in coffee beans.

They also contain sugar or sugar substitutes. The high doses of caffeine or guarana in energy drinks, combined with sugar, are what produce energy highs. Energy drinks contain about three times the amount of caffeine as cola. A 12 ounce bottle of Coca-Cola Classic contains 35 mg of caffeine, compared to a Monster energy drink which contains 120 mg of caffeine. The amount of caffeine in an energy drink can range from 75 milligrams to over 200 milligrams per serving. Some energy drinks replace the sugar with sugar substitute to avoid sugar crashes which have been known to cause seizures.

So, energy drinks in themselves are not dangerous or necessarily bad for you. The danger comes from drinking too many energy drinks which can cause nervousness, irritability, inability to sleep, excess urination and abnormal heart rhythms. These symptoms can occur with caffeine consumption over 400 mg. So, if two energy drinks are consumed and each one contains over 200 milligrams of caffeine, users could end up in the emergency room.

The other real danger is mixing energy drinks with alcohol. The stimulants in energy drinks can prevent people from realizing the full affects of alcohol consumption. Both alcohol and energy drinks dehydrate. This slows down the metabolic rate and increases the toxic affects of alcohol. There are actually a couple drinks on the market that have been prohibited in many states that sell energy drinks + alcohol all in one drink. What were they thinking?

About 66 percent percent of energy drinkers are 13 and 35 years old. The American Academy of Pediatrics does recommend that adolescents consume no more than 100 mg of caffeine a day and that younger children shouldn't drink caffeinated beverages on a regular basis. Those with heart problems, especially arrhythmia, diabetes, migraines and other health problems may also experience more adverse affects. So, although energy drinks may not be bad for most people, consumers?should?read the label and know exactly how much caffeine or other stimulants they are consuming.

PFT: Panthers want Gross to take pay cut

HarvinGetty Images

Vikings receiver Percy Harvin reportedly wants out of Minnesota.? He also reportedly wants to be paid like Lions receiver Calvin Johnson.

But Harvin is overlooking one important reality.? He?ll have to find a team that wants him, and a team that will pay him what he wants.

As one NFL front-office source explains it, Harvin and his agent forget that a large portion of the league had him off of their draft boards in 2009, due to his reputation for being a pain in the posterior.

In Minnesota, the Vikings have done a nice job of keeping Harvin from being too much of a problem, at least publicly.? Under former coach Brad Childress, then-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier often was the peacekeeper.? Now that Harvin and Frazier reportedly had a ?heated exchange? that preceded Harvin?s placement on injured reserve, Harvin may be out of allies in Minnesota.

That doesn?t mean he?ll have friends elsewhere.? Especially if he gets the kind of money he wants.? If/when (if) he cashes in, Harvin will be largely untouchable, free to do what he wants, how he wants, when he wants.

Even though there are plenty of desperate coaches and General Managers in the NFL, there?s a difference between desperation and stupidity.? For Harvin, the key word could be delusion.

If there?s no team who will both trade for him and pay him, he?ll continue to be the property of the Vikings.? And the manner in which he handles himself during the final year of his contract will go a long way toward shaping the extent to which other teams will, or won?t, be interested in him once he hits the open market.

And if he decides to hold out, the Vikings can fine him hundreds of thousands of dollars and, if he doesn?t show up by Week 10, squat on his rights through 2014.
