I like Caroline Myss's work. I've never really gotten into her sacred contracts work or into her medical intuition, but she is a person who really understands the mystics. And I love St. Teresa of Avila so her reinterpretation of the Christian classic the Interior Castle for modern lives was really valuable to me.

I loved the quote above. Yes, religion and spirituality bring great solace and strength in times of trouble. They bring healing on many levels, and prayer is valuable. But they don't fix your life magically and make everything easy. God is NOT a cure-all and the purpose of religion and spirituality is not self-improvement or self-help. There is an apocryphal story circulating on the internet?about someone cutting open a cocoon and the caterpillar not being able to live and fly as a butterfly, because the struggle and small opening force the blood out of the body into the wings of a butterfly when emerging from a cocoon.

Now I'm not saying not to pray. I'm not saying not to pursue self-improvement and heal psychological wounding and self-sabotage, or go to therapy. What I'm saying is that I agree with Caroline Myss that it doesn't make sense that God would be an "enabler" or codependent. God rescuing us out of messes so we could get ourselves into the next one, over and over again, would be unhealthy.? God would want us us to learn and grow, even if that were painful dealing with our mistakes.
I asked the angels for insights and received the following:

Praying for protection doesn't mean that you should wander around in bad areas of town alone at night and have faith that nothing will happen to you, and praying for healing doesn't mean that you can be cured of cancer without surgery or chemotherapy. You are given tools and resources, including reason and common sense.


People of faith still die. They still grieve. They are widowed, they have children or animals die. They lose jobs. Their homes burn down. They make poor investments. But the power of faith, of prayer, of God alive within them, is that they move THROUGH what they face, with ease and grace. It may not be EASY, but there is ease. There is an inner strength that is there, resources that they didn't know were within them.


God is not holding you up so you don't fall so you're like a baby who never learns to walk because it never falls. No, God is supporting you so that you learn to walk, learn to run, and learn to help others walk, others run... The spiritual life is one of unfolding, of transformation, and answered prayer may not be what makes life easy but what makes you strong.

The spiritual life is one of value and presence and that inner whisper of the Divine that says "good for you--keep going--you're doing so well."

Pope denounces dissident priests on celibacy

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI denounced priests who have questioned church teaching on celibacy and ordaining women, saying Thursday they were disobeying his authority to try to impose their own ideas on the church.

Benedict made the rare and explicit criticism from the altar of St. Peter's Basilica in his homily on Holy Thursday, when priests recall the promises they made when ordained.

In 2006, a group of Austrian priests launched the Pfarrer Initiative, or pastor initiative, a call to disobedience aimed at abolishing priestly celibacy and opening up the clergy to women to relieve the shortages of priests.

Last June, the group's members essentially threatened a schism, saying the Vatican's refusal to hear their complaints left them no choice but to "follow our conscience and act independently."

They issued a revised call to disobedience in which they said parishes would celebrate Eucharistic services without priests, that they would let women preach, and they pledged to speak out publicly and frequently for female and married priests.

The group now claims more than 300 Austrian priests and deacons as well as supporters in other countries, and its influence has grown to such an extent that top Austrian bishops met with Vatican officials in January to discuss how to handle them, Italian news reports said.

So far, neither the Vatican nor the archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn have imposed any canonical penalties on them.

In his homily, Benedict said the dissidents claim to be motivated by concern for the church. But he suggested that in reality they were just making "a desperate push to do something to change the church in accordance with (their) own preferences and ideas."

"We would like to believe that the authors of this summons are motivated by concern for the church, that they are convinced that the slow pace of institutions has to be overcome by drastic measures, in order to open up new paths and to bring the Church up to date," he said. "But is disobedience really a way to do this?"

He said Jesus always followed true obedience to God's will, not "human caprice."

The head of the initiative, Rev. Hellmut Schueller, downplayed the severity of Benedict's message and said the pope was merely asking for reflection on whether disobedience can reform the church.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Schueller noted that Benedict didn't forbid what the dissident priests were doing or advocating.

"We are listening with interest to this message," he said. "I cannot see it as a very sharp wording."

The members of the initiative, he said, will reflect on Benedict's words as part of a dialogue he said he hopes to open with Austrian bishops.

"We have decided to go this way because it's the way of our conscience, as faithful, and we are expressing only the opinion of the people at the base of the church."

He said the initiative did not seek to split the church or create schism, saying the positions articulated in the call for disobedience increasingly reflected the will of ordinary Catholics.

Any divisions that are being created, he said, are between the base of the church and the hierarchy.

Holy Thursday homilies are often unusual in that the pope uses them to issue direct messages to priests. In 2006, for example, Benedict read a letter written by a cleric who was killed as he prayed in Turkey.

And on Holy Thursday in 2002, Pope John Paul II broke his silence over the explosion of the U.S. sex abuse scandal, denouncing the sins of priestly abusers and the "grave scandal" that was casting a "dark shadow of suspicion" over all priests.

CyanogenMod introduces new mascot: Cid

After a long run with skateboarding Bugdroid "Andy" as their mascot, the team behind popular custom firmware CyanogenMod has unveiled a new robotic character to carry the CM banner forward. His name is Cid, and he's the little robot guy you see in the image above.

Cid -- a play on CID, or CyanogenMod ID -- is the result of the CM developers inviting fans to submit character designs over the past few weeks, and he's based on a creation by CM fan Caio Alves. Cid is a little more humanoid than Android's well-established Bugdroid character. Alves says he wanted the design to feel like "an evolution of what we had before", adding "it's a huge challenge to try to evolve something people know and love."

In an official blog post, the CyanogenMod team says it wants its new mascot to embody the idea of CM being more than just "stock Android on a zillion devices". This ties in with the devs' recent efforts to establish their work as a stand-alone OS based on Android, rather than just another custom ROM.

Chile court gives dam green light

Chile's Supreme Court has ruled in favour of a multi-billion dollar dam project in Patagonia, in the south of the country.

The court, the highest in the land, rejected an appeal by environmentalist groups who fear it will damage Patagonia's fragile ecosystem.

The project, which involves flooding 6,000 hectares (15,000 acres) of land, still needs government approval.

It has sparked a number of protests, some of them violent.

Court spokesman Jaime Rodriguez said the Supreme Court had rejected seven appeals filed against the HidroAysen project, a joint venture by Spanish-owned energy company Endesa and Chile's Colbun.

The objections ranged from the detrimental effect opponents said it would have on the Laguna San Rafael National Park to the dangers it could pose to the Huemul, an endangered Andean species of the deer family.

The project would involve the building of five dams on two fast-flowing rivers that run into the Pacific - two on the river Baker, and three on the river Pascua.

They would drain lakes in a region that is famous for its rugged beauty - a landscape of glaciers, ice-fields, mountains and fjords.

The government says the dams are essential to meet Chile's growing energy needs.

Final decision

The Supreme Court decision follows a ruling in October 2011 by a lower court, which had also found in favour of the project.

Environmentalists appealed against that decision, taking it to the Supreme Court.

Wednesday's ruling was the last legal hurdle in the way of the project, which would see two major rivers dammed and five power stations built.

The project will, however, still need government approval for the building of a 2,000km-long (1,250 mile-long) transmission line channelling power to the capital, Santiago.

If the government gives its go-ahead to the transmission line, construction work on the project could begin in 2014, and is expected to take around 10 years.

HidroAysen says the project "represents a cost-effective, sustainable, reliable and ecologically viable source of energy".
