Grading Banks on Their Small-Business Lending - NYTimes.com

On any given day at MultiFunding, I talk with a dozen or so bankers. As we work together to close loans, they demand precise information as they try to reach lending decisions. After all, precise information is what banking is all about.

When it comes to trying to figure out which banks are lending to small businesses, however, the conversation becomes a lot less precise. A lot of confusion arises from a lack of a clear definition of what constitutes a small-business loan (an issue I have blogged about previously). That?s why my company recently introduced a Web site called bankinggrades.com as a tool to help identify banks that are actively lending to small businesses.

We give every bank in the country a grade for their small-business lending activity based on the ratio of their small-business loan balances to their domestic deposits ? the more they lend, the higher their grades. Access to the site is free, and it?s intended to be a service to help small-business owners and entrepreneurs get to the finish line faster. My advice to those looking for a loan: start with the best-ranked banks in your community and work your way down the list.

In compiling our rankings, we define a small-business loan as any loan with a balance of $1 million or less, and we use data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (the latest is from March 31) that the banks self-report to the government each quarter. We think this is the fairest indicator of small-business lending in the market.

But not everyone agrees. In a recent article in The Huffington Post, Elise Brooks, director of communications for the Financial Services Roundtable, an association that represents the nation?s largest banks, insurance companies, securities firms and other financial institutions, criticized our formula. She suggests that commitment to small-business owners ?goes beyond a simple loans-to-deposit ratio? to include things like ?offering financial education? and ?networking opportunities.? (I?d be curious to hear what readers think: How valuable are these kinds of services?)

And an article that ran last week in The Baltimore Sun introduced BankingGrades and reported that many big banks criticize our formula, arguing that it is biased against banks that could never get a good grade because of the sheer size of their deposits.

As you would expect, I disagree with that point of view. Our formula is simple and straightforward: Bank of America, the largest bank in the country, doesn?t grade well on BankingGrades because it controls 11.06 percent of all domestic deposits and only makes 3.94 percent of all small-business loans.

The four largest banks in the country ? Bank of America plus Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase and Citibank ? control 34.38 percent of all domestic deposits and make 13.8 percent of all small-business loans. If you take the top 50 banks in the country ranked by deposits, they control 67.16 percent of all deposits and make 36.9 percent of all small-business loans.

Meanwhile, the other 7,215 banks in the country control 32.84 percent of all domestic deposits and make 63.10 percent of all small-business loans. Any way you cut it, from my perspective, the big banks are not doing their share.

Access to capital for small-business owners is a critical component of economic recovery, and we think bankinggrades.com will increase transparency and clarity about who is doing what to help small businesses. What do you think?

How To Provide Top Quality Customer Service in Internet Marketing ...

How do most people decide how they feel about shopping at any store? By the customer service provided to you by the sales clerks of course! Most likely, when you consider whether to return to a certain business, retail store or restaurant in the future, what determines your decision is the kind of customer service you received there in the past. Customer service is the name of the game and yet, so many internet marketers completely ignore customer service as they work to build their businesses. The need to provide good customer service is not any less important online than anywhere else, even if your customers can?t actually see you on the internet! Let?s look at some ways that internet marketers can improve their customer service skills.

You should always respond to any questions or comments in a timely manner. Try to get back to them within one business day if you can. A good response has to be a personal one you?ve written yourself. Do not rely on automated messages that do not address the person?s specific question. If you address all questions, inquiries and complaints promptly and in a personal manner, people will notice that you really care about their concerns. If you had an offline business, would you ignore customers who walked in the door or called you on the phone? No offline business could get away with this for long! You have been reading about these strategies, and we hope you are thinking about their possible uses in what you do. There are all kinds of business models that will not make use of every promotion vehicle, and that could include commission vantage scam since we are talking about it. However, as strange as it may sound not all marketers want to take their businesses to higher levels of performance. On the other hand, it does seem in our experience that most businesses want to do more. The gains you can realize by scaling what you have going on with any advertising and your marketing can make all the difference. Also, remember there is nothing wrong with testing and trying something new, and that is really the only intelligent approach to expansion. Ask your customers for feedback on your service, and use it. Try to make the time to personally reply to each email you receive, even the ones that are negative. Sometimes the best feedback you receive will be the negative variety because it will allow you to see how to improve what you offer. You can simply draft an email that says ?Thank you for letting us know what you think of our product? and then you should address a few of the comments or concerns they expressed in their mail; doing this will ingratiate you to even the most disenfranchised of your customers. What?s more, they will be more likely to buy from you in the future because they will know that you see them as people and not just as PayPal deposits.

Send out some free information to your customers every now and then. You?ll also want to give them free information they can use instead of only flooding them with one sales pitch after another. If they think that you will only send them promotional material, they will be much more likely to blanket delete all of your mails without having read them. You customer base will be much more receptive to opening your emails because they have come to expect useful and complimentary information. You can create emails that spotlight happenings in the community or create interest in other events happening in your niche. This will demonstrate to your customers that you care about the niche you are in as much as yourself, and they will be happy to see this. Offline businesses aren?t the only ones that need to pay attention to customer service. If you do not continually provide excellent customer service, you will find you client base eroding and you will not see many return customers. As with other business models, excellent customer service can be what helps your online business stand out. What efforts are you making to improve your customer relations?

Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe

It?s little wonder that Asus triumphs across so many PC hardware categories: The company never quite knows when to quit. We?ve seen this on its Editors? Choice?winning motherboards of the past, such as the P9X79 Deluxe (for Sandy Bridge?Extreme processors), and we?re seeing it again now with the latest honoree, the P8Z77-V Deluxe. It may be a tad on the expensive side (it runs $284.99 list), but it offers a broad, forward-thinking feature set that other similarly priced LGA1155 motherboards have trouble matching. You can find boards with still more bling if you really want them, but the blend offered with the P8Z77-V Deluxe is impossible to beat at this price.

Based on the full-size ATX form factor, the P8Z77-V Deluxe can accept processors from both the current third-generation Core (aka ?Ivy Bridge?) and second-generation (?Sandy Bridge?) families, providing slightly more versatility than Intel usually allows. The motherboard also utilizes Intel?s Z77 Express chipset?the most powerful of those in the company?s mainstream line?which gives you the ability to overclock the CPU and even specify a solid-state drive (SSD) for use in data caching with Intel?s Smart Response Technology, or SRT. (We covered SRT in greater detail in our review of the Intel SSD 311 Series.)

As you might expect, the P8Z77-V Deluxe offers a considerable amount in terms of hardware and connectivity options. Starting with video, it has two display outputs, HDMI (for maximum resolutions of 1,920 by 1,2020) and DisplayPort (2,560 by 1,600), for use with the processors? integrated graphics systems. If you prefer to go the discrete route (which we always recommend), there are three PCI Express (PCIe) version 3.0 x16 slots; one always operates at x4, but you can use the others as either a single x16 or two x8s. LucidLogix?s Virtu MVP technology will switch dynamically between on-chip video and your discrete card if both are present. (Four PCIe x1 slots complete the expansion slot lineup.)

Four memory slots on the P8Z77-V Deluxe support up to 32GB of dual-channel DDR3 1600 RAM (or DDR3 2800 when overclocked). On the Intel storage controller you can connect four 3Gbps SATA II drives and two 6Gbps SATA drives (using RAID Levels 0, 1, 5, and 10); a secondary Marvell PCIe 9128 controller drives two additional SATA III ports. (The two eSATA ports work by way of yet another controller, from ASMedia.)

Joining the HDMI, DisplayPort, and eSATA ports on the P8Z77-V Deluxe?s rear panel are four USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, two Gigabit Ethernet jacks (one Intel 82579V, one RealTek 8111F), optical S/PDIF out, and six analog ports (controlled by the RealTek ALC898 chipset) for setting up an eight-channel surround-sound system. Finally, a button flashes back to the motherboard?s default BIOS, so you can make changes without fear you won?t be able to get the system to boot again).

Should you still be hungry for these types of ports, headers on the motherboard make it possible to add up to six more: two USB 3.0 and four USB 2.0. There?s also a header for an even more interesting kind: Thunderbolt. This lets you add the ultra-fast transfer technology later, and only if you want; Asus also offers the port itself on its (considerably more expensive) P8Z77-V Premium.

Don?t worry about wireless capabilities on the P8Z77-V Deluxe, either. Plug in the included Wi-Fi GO! card, and your system will also have 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi (supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz) and Bluetooth 4.0. (Antennas for both come in the box.) With the included Wi-Fi Go! software you have easy access to the other systems and DLNA-compliant devices on your home network, so you can listen to music and view videos and use a Remote Desktop program to control your computer from anywhere (even your Android or iOS smartphone or tablet).

Asus provides plenty of additional extras as well. Two Q connectors ease some of the frustration of hooking up your case?s front-panel wiring or USB ports by letting you do more of the precision work outside the case first. Then there are the design features the motherboard boasts: Smart Digi+, which gives you finer-grain control over voltage regulation of key components (the CPU, integrated graphics, and RAM) when overclocking, as well as automated power saving and 20-phase power design for the CPU and graphics and two-phase power design for the RAM (all utility-controlled). The on-disc software library is also extensive, with a hefty selection of overclocking and BIOS utilities, as well as helpful tools like USB 3.0 Boost for increasing transfer speeds by tailoring USB 3.0 ports? performance to the devices you connect to them. Asus? graphical UEFI remains one of the best on the motherboard market, with both normal and advanced modes that give you just the access you need to system-tweaking features.

Although most similarly priced motherboards that use the same chipset deliver roughly equivalent performance, in our tests the Z77H2-AX routinely came out near the upper end of the scale. When using a Core i7-3770K, our test system turned in the best results we saw in our Adobe Photoshop CS5 (2 minutes 46 seconds), CineBench R11.5 (7.57 for all CPU cores, 1.66 for just one), Futuremark PCMark 7 (3,893), Geekbench 2.2.7 (16,260), POV-Ray 3.7 RC5 (3 minutes 12 seconds with all cores active, 13 minutes 54 seconds with only one working), and data rates of 230MBps in TrueCrypt 7.1a.

In terms of power usage, the Z77H2-AX was not the leanest Ivy Bridge motherboard we?ve yet tested?all things considered, that?s the Intel Desktop Board DZ77GA-70K. As measured with an Extech Datalogger, it finished second highest when idling (77.6 watts, behind the 85 watts of the ECS Z77H2-AX) and second lowest under full load (138.9 watts, just above the Intel?s 136.3 watts).

The ECS Z77H2-AX wins in the looks department; its gorgeous gold plated elements make it look more adult than the Asus? P8Z77-V Deluxe?s blue, white, and black, and the ECS offers a couple of features the Asus doesn?t (dual full-speed PCIe x16 slots and a Mini PCIe jack). It?s also weighed down by a noticeably higher price ($309.99 list), somewhat lower ease of use, and eye-poppingly higher power usage.? For those reasons the P8Z77-V Deluxe is our Editors? Choice; it?s definitely the best all-around board you can currently get for the foundation of your LGA1155 system.

How To Cut Your Grocery Costs By 10% or more - Debt Consolidation

by Kirk Carlson on June 25, 2012

It seems to us that our grocery bill gets higher every month. There are only three of us but were probably spending better than $600 a month on ?groceries.?

The reason I put the word groceries? in quotes is because what a lot of people don?t think about is how much of our grocery bills are nonfood items. In our case, there may be only 2 adults and one child in the house but there are also three dogs that consume a total of 14 cans of dog food a week. If we were to subtract that from our $600 grocery bill, we would probably find it?s actually much closer to $550 a month. And if we subtracted everything we spend on laundry detergents, shampoos and other health and beauty products, our true grocery bill would probably be less than $400 a month.

Become a coupon junkie

The surest way to cut your grocery bill is by using as many coupons as you can get your hands on. We?ve seen many coupons that can save you as much as $.50 or even $1.00 on items that you would buy anyway. If you have a computer you can go online and find printable coupons from the stores where you shop (such as Kroger?s or Target) or from sites like The Coupon Clippers (the couponclippers.com) where you can buy coupons in bulk. For example, if you have a baby and use a lot of diapers you could buy 10 coupons and save nearly $10 on your next 10 purchases.

Make it a game

Some families actually make a game out of coupons and give a prize to the family member who finds the best or most coupons a week. Don?t think for a minute that it?s not worth using coupons and save just $.50 on an item as this can eventually grow into a much larger amount than you might imagine. We know families who are saving as much as $20 a week simply by using coupons.

Plan your menus around the ?specials?

Look for coupons or BOGOs (buy one, get one) on food items that you can plan menus around. As an example of this, if you find an especially good price on chicken or pork, plan a meal around these meats. You can surround the chicken or pork with vegetables that are on sale (or have coupons) and put together a nice meal for $7 or less?and feed a family of four.

Make a list and stick to it

One of the biggest mistakes people make in grocery shopping is to do it without a list. While you might think that you can just go to the store and choose the items you will need for the following three or five days, I can promise one of two things will happen. You will either forget five or six important items, which will mean yet another trip to the store. Or you will end up buying a lot of ?impulse? items. It?s really important to figure out your menus for the next few days, make a list of all the items you will need to fix those meals and then never deviate from your list.

Never shop before a meal

Oh, and one other thing. Never go grocery shopping before you eat lunch or dinner. Statistics show that the hungrier you are when you go grocery shopping, the higher your grocery bill will be. And that?s a fact.
