Transit of Venus: Early 'tape measure' for size of our solar system (+video)

The next transit of Venus occurs June 5. Astronomers once used the transit of Venus across the sun to come up with the 'astronomical unit' ? the distance from Earth to our sun.?

On June 5, the planet Venus will appear to cross in front of the disk of the sun, appearing as a small black dot. The historic skywatching event, called a transit of Venus by astronomers, is among the rarest of predictable phenomena and one that has amazed scientists and observers throughout history.

Skip to next paragraph Next month astronomers across the world will be hoping to get a clear view of the Transit of Venus for the last time in their lives. On June 5 and 6, Venus will pass directly between Earth and the Sun, visible as a small black dot gliding slowly across Sun's face. The Transits occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years, meaning the next Transit won't appear for another 105 years. Jim Drury has more.

Venus transits occur like clockwork, appearing in pairs eight years apart, either in June or December. On this scheduled, a pair of December transits follows a June pair after 105 1/2 years. A June pair will come 121 1/2 years after a December pair. As seen from Earth, only transits of Mercury and Venus are possible.

Transits of Venus and Mercury hold an interesting place in astronomical history. The main reason is the slightly different times that the events occur as seen from different locations on the surface of the Earth. The diameter of our planet is appreciable when compared to the distance to Mercury and Venus, allowing astronomers to triangulate on the planets from various points on Earth when they are seen against a bright background as the surface of the sun.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

In this way the difference between the distances of the planet and the sun can be found. Because of its considerably larger size, Venus is better for this purpose, and in fact, during the 18th and 19th centuries those rare transits of Venus provided astronomers with the best opportunity for measuring the absolute scale of the solar system from Kepler's third law. Such a value was poorly known at that time. Edmund Halley ? he of the comet fame ? was the first to realize that transits could be used to measure the Earth's distance from the sun, a distance called the "astronomical unit." [Gallery: Transits of Venus Throughout History]

Today, this method has been superseded, chiefly because those moments when either Mercury or Venus begins moving onto or off of the sun require precise accuracy, which more than two centuries ago was always difficult to attain.

Since 1882, transit observations ? and all the old methods of determining the astronomical unit ? have been hopelessly outmoded by modern techniques. Tracking of interplanetary spacecraft, and especially radar ranging to the inner planets, finally achieved the precision sought by astronomers for so long. Indeed, the upcoming Venus transit will be looked upon as merely a chance to view a rare and striking event.

Nonetheless, elaborate expeditions that were mounted to observe the transits of Venus in 1761 and 1769 provided astronomers with their first good value for the distance of the Earth to the sun (called an astronomical unit).

Trials and tribulations

Kepler had predicted that a transit of Venus would take place on Dec. 6, 1631, but, unfortunately, a large wind and rainstorm obscured the sun across most of Europe, preventing any observations.

An obscure young English astronomer, Jeremiah Horrocks, scrutinized Kepler's tables and came to the conclusion that another transit of Venus was to occur on Dec. 4,1639. Horrocks was ready for the big event, carefully examining the sun even the day before ? just in case he erred in his calculations. On Dec. 4 (a Sunday), under scattered-to-broken cloud cover, Horrocks was at his telescope from sunrise until 1 o'clock, at which point he interrupted his vigil by "business of the highest importance" ? conducting divine services at his church.

Fans of onscreen heroics should get their fingertips ready to tear up Twitter because that's where they'll be voting for their favorite onscreen do-gooder in the new category of Best Hero for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

Beginning Tuesday (May 29) and right on through to the live show on June 3, fans can vote and track the nominees for Best Hero, presented by Sprint, via Twitter using hashtags associated with the nominees. Is your favorite hero a contender?

Check out the nominees:
»Harry Potter, "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (#votepotter)
»Katniss Everdeen, "The Hunger Games" (#votekatniss)
»Thor, "Thor" (#votethor)
»Captain America, "Captain America" (#votecaptain)
»Jenko, "21 Jump Street" (#votejenko)

The new nods for "Harry Potter," "The Hunger Games" and "21 Jump Street" add to those films' already hefty tallies. And the nomination for Katniss of "The Hunger Games," played by Best Female Performance nominee Jennifer Lawrence, pushes that film ahead of "Bridesmaids" to become the most-nominated film this year with nine nominations. The bump gives "Deathly Hallows, Part 2" seven different chances to walk away with the Golden Popcorn (and remember, the franchise still unbelievably has never scored the coveted Best Movie prize despite several nominations over the years).

"21 Jump Street" now has six chances come next Sunday's show, while the nods for "Thor" and "Captain America" give both of those films their lone nominations for this year's awards. Still, both movies will no doubt be serious contenders for next year's awards given the amazing success and acclaim of "The Avengers," which features the titular heroes in addition to Iron Man, the Black Widow, Hawkeye and the Hulk.

The winner for Best Hero will be presented with the Golden Popcorn statue during the live show on MTV, Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for Best Hero and your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET.

Interior Design With an Orangery | Home Improvement | Furniture

Home Decoration, Interior Design

Interior Design With an OrangeryGiven current house prices, lots of people cannot supply move residence in order in order to increase more useful space. Instead they may be taking a look at adding additional rooms to their existing homes, however a full height extension may be pricey, particularly if they?re only looking for one extra room. A conservatory is definitely solution, but increasingly, homeowners are choosing to include an orangery instead ? which is not only a beautiful option, but can also be more practical and of long term value. The important thing difference between an orangery along with a conservatory will probably be the number of glass used.

An orangery is constructed of less than 70% glass along with the rest made up of a low wall and quite often a level, covered roof with perhaps a ?roof lantern? to feature additional light from above. Obviously these reviews will vary based on what is required, but it is an outstanding general guideline. Whether the building is considered a conservatory or an orangery under building regulations and planning rules for you will depend on the volume of glass it contains. Below 70% glass and you have an orangery, above and it is a conservatory. This can be important since a conservatory will not require planning permission (except if you are adding them a listed building), whereas an orangery does. However, I would always advisable that you consult with the relevant authorities before deciding to go ahead with construction, to get cautious.

Adding an orangery could be more expensive than a conservatory in relation to building costs, but in the longer term, it very well could be the better investment. Just because a conservatory has additional glass, it?s more susceptible to variations within the weather. In spite of additional heating for winter and suitable blinds to guard you out of your summer sun, they could continue to stay colder inside the winter and hotter during summer than an orangery, which, with less glass, may possibly be more insulated, cheaper to heat and far more likely to be used all year round.

The available choices available at the moment for the kinds of orangery you are able to choose are great. You can receive for uPVC, hardwoods or oak, inside a traditional or contemporary style, reported by your very own taste and what would fit your home. That may prefer the color that you pick, meaning you can create it as individual as you wish!

San Antonio Mayor Juli?n Castro fires back at Charles Barkley (Video)

If you?re a regular viewer of ?Inside the NBA,? you should know all about Charles Barkley?s outspoken dislike for the Spurs? hometown. San Antonio has frequently been a target of ridicule by Barkley, who has done everything from cracking jokes about the Alamo to calling the San Antonio River a ?dirty little creek? to even taking shots at the city?s women (?they ain?t got no skinny women down there?).

So, needless to say, it should be fun to see the reaction Chuck gets from Spurs fans when he and the rest of the ?Inside? fellas start filming on location in the city for the Western Conference Finals beginning on Sunday. With that in mind, San Antonio Mayor Juli?n Castro has already gotten a head start on the Chuck bashing. And, thankfully, for all our pleasure, he did so publicly on YouTube:

Shots fired! This can only lead to an appearance by Castro ? hopefully flanked by two of San Antonio?s top babes ? on the set of ?Inside? when the guys are taping at the AT&T Center, right?

Anti-obesity proposal fails again at McDonald's - Restaurants News ...

(Reuters) ? McDonald's Corp. investors soundly rejected a shareholder proposal that would have required the world's biggest fast-food chain to assess its impact on childhood obesity.

The subject was a major topic of discussion at Thursday's annual shareholder meeting, which also served as a send-off for retiring Chief Executive Jim Skinner - whose nearly eight years at the helm will be remembered as a time when the price of McDonald's stock tripled.

The shareholder proposal, which also failed last year, returned amid growing concern over the social and financial costs of obesity in the United States and around the world - not only in terms of healthcare-related expenses but also lower worker productivity and diminished quality of life.

Nearly one-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese. America is one of the fattest nations on earth, and the Institute of Medicine, in a 2006 report requested by Congress, said junk food marketing contributes to an epidemic of childhood obesity that continues to rise. The institute is the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

McDonald's executives on Thursday defended the brand and its advertising.

"We're proud of the changes we've made to our menu. We've done more than anybody in the industry around fruits and vegetables and variety and choice," said Skinner, who will retire on June 30 and who received a standing ovation from investors.

McDONALD'S HEALTH FOOTPRINT

As one of the largest and most influential companies in the restaurant industry, McDonald's often bears the brunt of criticism from consumers, parents and healthcare professionals, who want it to serve healthier food and curb its marketing to children.

While the chain has added food like salads, oatmeal and smoothies to its menu, it has pulled ahead of rivals and delivered outsized returns for investors with help from its core lineup of fatty food and sugary drinks.

Corporate Accountability International, a business watchdog group, for the second year in a row backed the obesity proposal, which was endorsed by 2,500 pediatricians, cardiologists and other healthcare professionals.

It called on the company to issue a report on its "health footprint." The document would evaluate how diet-related illness would affect McDonald's profit.

In the time since the last shareholder vote, McDonald's has changed the contents of its popular Happy Meals for children - reducing the french fry portion by more than half and automatically including apples in every meal.

It also won the dismissal of a lawsuit that sought to stop the company from using free toys to promote its Happy Meals for children in California.

Dr Andrew Bremer, a pediatric endocrinologist and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, presented the proposal at the meeting and said McDonald's has chosen to employ "countless new PR tactics" that create a perception of change while "unreasonably" exposing shareholders to significant risk.

"It is not enough to point to so-called healthier menu items when children are still the target of aggressive marketing of an overwhelming unhealthy brand," Bremer said.

McDonald's board of directors recommended a "no" vote on the proposal, calling it "unnecessary and redundant."

Shareholders heeded that call. The proposal received 6.4 percent of votes in support, up from 5.6 percent a year ago.

Incoming CEO Don Thompson, who said his two children eat at McDonald's, was forceful in his response to questions from Corporate Accountability representatives.

"I would never do anything to hurt them or any other children, nor would we as a corporation ... Do me the honor, and our entire organization, of not associating us with doing something that is damaging to children. We have been very responsible," Thompson said.

McDonald's stock was down 0.5 percent at $91.03 on Thursday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.

ARTS & COMMUNITY: LIVE LOCAL COLUMBUS ~ BusTown Music

Written by Josh Weiker

?

Make room on your newsstands and coffee tables ? there?s a new magazine in town ?

Live Local Columbus ?

(?Live? as in ?living,?? not to be confused with ?Live? as in a rock concert; its okay, heteronyms can be tricky) . So now that we?re saying the title correctly, what is it? Well, it?s like a grab bag of articles, coupons, and ads, but specifically for all things local. Businesses, Arts, Music, Entertainment, Dining, Sports, Travel, even Local Banking ? if you want to do anything, and want to keep it local ? this magazine is where to start.

????? Referred to as ?Your goofy grassroots guidebook to Columbus,? this magazine is the product of a beautiful collaboration between two Columbus giants, the Small Business Beanstalk and Outlook Media. With their powers combined, they have compiled a number of individuals from different areas and backgrounds to reveal a glimpse of the city?s immense personality (kind of like Captain Planet, but in magazine form ? come to think of it we should have a mascot, Captain Columbus ? instead of flying, he can ride a fixed-gear).

The contributors to Volume 1, Issue 1 of Live Local Columbus include:

Chris Hayes ? Live Local Publisher/ Talk Local

Michael S. Brown ? Develop Local

Brian Cheek ? Convene Local (Local Conventions)

Johnny DiLoretto ? My Columbus

Jim Ellison ? Eating Local

And me, Josh Weiker with Local Music

?????? So I?m not going to lie, had BusTown not been lucky enough to be a part of this publication, I might have very easily passed over it in the hubbub of local publications. And that is exactly what you SHOULD NOT DO. Without giving too much away, here are a few of my favorite tid-bits from this first issue:

an extraordinary expose about a number of local breweries ? its like a BeerFest, on a page ? this way, you can actually learn something AND remember it the next day.

Local Fashion ? by Thomas McClure ??

I?m not too terribly fashionable, nor ever up with current trends (I mostly wear the same drab stuff that I?ve had since high school); so I don?t really care about fashion. All of that said, I really liked the article about Local Fashion. Mr. McClure gives you a very descriptive, yet to-the-point analysis of what?s appropriate for the more interested local fahionistas; sans any of the over-the-top guilt-trips or life-coach advice that has seem to become all but standard from most fashion critics ?? ?

Consumer credit scores are in simple terms a particular person's report on their aptitude to reliably take care of consumer debt. Loan providers exploit consumer credit reviews as well as rating models to help figure out the financial risk of offering a loan to credit seekers. Borrowers who've proved a sturdy and repeated history of responsible getting credit and repayment are likely to get hold of higher than average loan sums in addition to significantly better percentage rates and terms in comparison with people who may have failed to satisfy loan repayments vigilantly and in full.

Credit scores will be influenced by a selection of score factors that help suggest to the service provider what sort of borrower the consumer has actually proven to be previously. Features that affect ones credit ratings background can include funding profile, loan-to-account balance proportions, prompt installment payments, county court judgements, wages, and much more. Loan merchants are in the enterprise of lending funds. Having said that, prior to lending to an individual, the finance company wants to determine the financial risk to reward rate offered by funding the customer's personal loan requirements. The lower the potential risk the client poses, the greater the negotiating authority she or he has. Customers that have a bad credit score are generally subject to the whims of the supplier as to whether or not they will pick up credit, and also whether or not it'll be made available with manageable repayment terms and interest rates. Usually, below-average credit clients pay back far more.

Regretably, the majority of consumers are uneducated concerning just how consumer credit ratings are measured. Generally customers start out crafting their own credit rating very early in adult life, prior to when many are actually equipped for that job. Young men and women are often naive when it comes to exactly how radically their finances are altered courtesy of generating bad or good credit. That isn't a worry for some individuals up until the time it will come time to purchase a home or even an auto, and that is when a trip to a low credit score service might well be advantageous.

An individual in need of a mortgage loan on a new house could actually see somewhat varying home loan deals contingent on whether he has a first-rate or unfavorable credit ranking. Buyers with impressive credit ratings could possibly come across decreased upfront loan expenses. They're also very likely to end up with an enhanced rate of interest with their financing. Just one half to full percentage point of interest fees for a conventional mortgage can certainly have an enormous financial impact.

Throughout the life of a mortgage loan, a buyer could potentially perhaps save tens of thousands in interest charges merely by finding one half to 1 per cent improved price for the home finance loan. Provisions are frequently more beneficial at the same time. The whole thing refers to bargaining strength. A consumer having a positive credit ranking is empowered to bargain beneficially with lending companies simply because he / she presents reduced associated risk. A consumer with adverse credit finds less options of willing creditors along with minimized negotiating strength.

Martin writes for ADM Online who offer loans to UK residents with good or poor credit ratings.

Researchers reveal an RNA modification influences thousands of genes

Friday, May 18, 2012

Over the past decade, research in the field of epigenetics has revealed that chemically modified bases are abundant components of the human genome and has forced us to abandon the notion we've had since high school genetics that DNA consists of only four bases.

Now, researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have made a discovery that once again forces us to rewrite our textbooks. This time, however, the findings pertain to RNA, which like DNA carries information about our genes and how they are expressed. The researchers have identified a novel base modification in RNA which they say will revolutionize our understanding of gene expression.

Their report, published May 17 in the journal Cell, shows that messenger RNA (mRNA), long thought to be a simple blueprint for protein production, is often chemically modified by addition of a methyl group to one of its bases, adenine. Although mRNA was thought to contain only four nucleobases, their discovery shows that a fifth base, N6-methyladenosine (m6A), pervades the transcriptome. The researchers found that up to 20 percent of human mRNA is routinely methylated. Over 5,000 different mRNA molecules contain m6A, which means that this modification is likely to have widespread effects on how genes are expressed.

"This finding rewrites fundamental concepts of the composition of mRNA because, for 50 years, no one thought mRNA contained internal modifications that control function," says the study's senior investigator, Dr. Samie R. Jaffrey, an associate professor of pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

"We know that DNA and proteins are routinely modified by chemical switches that have profound effects on their function in both health and disease. But biologists believed mRNA was simply an intermediate between DNA and protein," he says. "Now we know mRNA is much more complex, and defects in RNA methylation can lead to disease."

Indeed, as part of the study, the researchers demonstrated that the obesity risk gene, FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated), encodes an enzyme capable of reversing this modification, converting m6A residues in mRNA back to regular adenosine. Humans with FTO mutations have an overactive FTO enzyme, which results in low levels of m6A and causes abnormalities in food intake and metabolism that lead to obesity.

The researchers uncovered links between m6A and other diseases as well.

"We found that m6A is present in many mRNAs encoded by genes linked to human diseases, including cancer as well as several brain disorders, such as autism, Alzheimer's disease, and schizophrenia," says the study's lead investigator, Dr. Kate Meyer, a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Jaffrey's laboratory.

"Methylation in RNA is a reversible modification that appears to be a central step in a wide variety of biological pathways and physiological processes," she says.

The first time that m6A was detected in mRNA was in 1975, but at the time scientists were unsure whether this finding was a result of contamination by other RNA molecules, Dr. Jaffrey says. Over 90 percent of RNA is either transfer RNA (tRNA) or ribosomal RNA (rRNA), cellular workhorses that are routinely modified.

But Dr. Jaffrey says he has always been interested in the idea that mRNA may be modified -- "DNA, proteins, other forms of RNA are modified, so why not mRNA?" he says -- so he and investigators in his laboratory developed a technique to help them uncover methylation in mRNA taken from both mouse and human samples.

They used two different antibodies that recognize and bind to m6A in mRNA in order to selectively isolate the mRNAs that contain m6A. By subjecting these mRNAs to next-generation sequencing, they were able to identify the sequence of each individual mRNA they had isolated. Co-authors Dr. Christopher Mason and Dr. Olivier Elemento, assistant professors from the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and Computational Genomics in Computational Biomedicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, then developed computational algorithms to reveal the identity of each of these methylated mRNAs.

The Weill Cornell researchers don't know how the thousands of m6As they detected in humans work to control the function of mRNAs, but they do note that the m6As are located near "stop codons" in mRNA sequences. These areas signal the end of translation of the mRNA, suggesting that m6A might influence ribosomal function. "But we really don't know yet," says Dr. Mason, a co-lead investigator on the study. "It may allow other proteins to bind to mRNA, or subject these mRNAs to a whole new regulatory pathway. Our bioinformatics analyses are providing several hints about the possible impact of methylation on RNA function."

Indeed, in their study, the investigators have already found that m6A sites frequently occur in regions of mRNA that are highly conserved across several species of vertebrates. "This shows that m6A sites are not just important for humans, but rather are maintained under selection across hundreds of millions of years of evolution, and thus are likely of critical importance for all animals," Dr. Mason says.

"This is the first demonstration of an epitranscriptomic modification -- alterations in RNA function that are not due to changes in the underlying sequence," he adds.

"These findings are very, very exciting, and amazing, really, when you consider that mRNA has been around for so long and that nobody realized, in all this time, that they were being regulated in this way," Dr. Jaffrey says. "It was right under our noses."

In addition to investigating how m6A regulates mRNAs within cells, the researchers are now focused on identifying the enzymes and pathways that control mRNA methylation.

Their study already demonstrates that FTO is capable of reversing adenosine methylation and suggests that it acts on a large proportion of cellular mRNA. "FTO mutations are estimated to occur in one billion people worldwide and are a leading cause of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Our studies link m6A levels in mRNA to these major health problems and identify for the first time the mRNAs which are potentially targeted by FTO," Dr. Meyer says.

The investigators are currently working to understand how defective regulation of m6A in patients with FTO mutations causes obesity and metabolic disorders, and they are also developing tests to rapidly identify compounds that inhibit FTO activity. These compounds are expected to inhibit the overactive FTO found in humans, potentially leading to novel therapeutics for diabetes and obesity.

Other study co-authors are Yogesh Saletore and Paul Zumbo, members of Dr. Mason's Integrative Functional Genomics laboratory, in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Weill Cornell.

Weill Cornell Medical College has filed a provisional patent on the techniques used to detect m6A. The study was funded by National Institutes of Health grants and the Starr Cancer Consortium.

Kan

While hardware comes in the form of input from the management team in line with the company's vision, SCG president and CEO Kan Trakulhoon says software refers to employees' creativity and this can prosper only with supportive HR strategies.

In an executive talk, hosted by the Nation Group and Nation University's Faculty of Business Administration, he insisted that despite the changing business environment, the four core values of the group were maintained with a slight change - the group must be open and ready to cope with challenges.

"We're embarking on what would enable SCG to sustain leadership through the tough competition of today and tomorrow," he said.

After assuming his position in 2006, Kan said he had learned a great deal from his predecessor - Chumpol Na Lamlieng - who charted a new course for the decades-old SCG.

Kan played a pivotal role in making changes happen, including the innovation that sustained the group's business despite global uncertainties and disastrous floods at home.

The group learnt well its lessons from the 1997 financial crisis, when it was forced to liquidate non-core businesses and saw the workforce dwindle from 35,000 to 16,000 in 1998. Now, it believes that as long as it adheres to the four core values, the company can weather any storm.

The core values are adherence to fairness, dedication to excellence, belief in the value of individuals and concern for social responsibility. As SCG sets its sights on becoming a leading Asean firm, Kan sees the need for the organisation to be open-minded, eager to learn, open to networking and collaboration, as well as being ready to learn from mistakes. Plus, SCG needs to think out of the box, take risks and be willing to take initiatives. Would this change if some of existing employees leave and new ones join under SCG's 2015 vision for 38,000 employees, with 25 per cent of them foreigners?

"The values will not go away, even if SCG welcomes a new chief," he said.

He added that fairness meant SCG would not take advantage of suppliers and other stakeholders. Regarding excellence and individual values, SCG spends thriftily on its employees. Each year, executives win scholarships to further their studies at world-class universities, aside from executive programmes. On corporate social responsibility, SCG applies its practices at home and overseas. It copes with challenges well, thanks to the huge investment in research and development, which last year cost about Bt1.3 billion. Now, with 38 high-value-added products, it can weather any storm as sales are not hit by global uncertainties. "We must change the mindset. Thais can excel in terms of innovation if we're committed to it."

Kan diligently delivers lectures to employees in order to ensure mutual understanding.

Following the core values yields fruitful results. SCG failed in its first attempt to expand overseas. Then, it followed the joint-venture format, allowing overseas partners and their families to run factories. Now, it has learned to establish a distribution network first, to market its products. When the presence is strong enough, a manufacturing plant is set up. For example, SCG distributed its cement in Cambodia for more than nine years before investing in an 800,000-tonne cement plant. In merger and acquisition cases, delegated staff are now involved from the very start - from the due diligence process to acquainting themselves with existing executives.

"The new territory has changed. From a domestic player, we have to cope with the Asean Economic Community. Now, we realise that we need to know overseas markets first. R&D teams must be decentralised and we know that a single HR package will not work," he said.

Inspiring employees are schemes like "Career Click" whereby employees can apply for a job offered by a company in the group. The doors are open to new employees with a "think-out-of-the-box attitude". Execs are sent for two-month-long development programmes, while succession plans are regularly brushed up to ensure continuity. Engagement model is employed to ensure high retention, which has resulted in only three resignations in the six years that Kan has been in office. To retain successful employees, Kan said that the priority is the company must be clear in its direction.

HR strategies are of increasing importance as the company gears up for regional expansion, he said. Cross-cultural diversity is imminent, requiring the company to prepare local staff for overseas work. For smooth operations, executives with scholarships are expected to introduce changes. Every quarter, executive meetings are hosted in Thailand, on top of regional meetings, which took place in Vietnam in 2007, the Philippines in 2008, Myanmar in 2010 and Indonesia this year. The first priority for promotion is ethics, as "we're ready to fire anyone with tainted morals. We still have many left." While executives are offered challenging jobs and freedom, they also enjoy satisfactory remuneration, which is benchmarked with global companies.

While citing that leaders should give employees what they want before demands are filed, he advised CEOs to listen wholeheartedly to their employees' voices as their experiences may be inapplicable to some situations. All employees must be equally treated and good ideas must be supported. No face-keeping is allowed.

"Bosses can lose face, but it's alright if that's healthy for the organisation," he noted.

DC Decoder?s Liz Marlantes explains.

That's one of the details tucked in thousands of pages of documents that were seized in last year's Navy SEAL raid.?West Point?s Center for Combating Terrorism (CTC) released a study of 17 declassified documents today, offering a window into Mr. bin Laden?s views.

The report notes that one of ?the most compelling? stories to come out of the declassified documents is bin Laden?s struggle to rein in Al Qaeda affiliates, and keep his intended message and branding on track.

?I plan to release a statement [announcing] that we are starting a new phase to correct [the mistakes] we made; in so doing, we shall reclaim, God willing, the trust of a large segment of those who lost their trust in the Jihadis,? bin Laden wrote in 2010.

The CTC report notes that though bin Laden publicly condemned the West, focusing on the repression and injustices exacted on Muslims by countries like the US, his private correspondence reveals that he was particularly pained by domestic jihadi attacks on Muslims.

His frustration may have even led bin Laden to consider rebranding his Al Qaeda movement as a whole. One letter by an unknown author suggests a list of potential names?(see English translated document?# 0000009).?Some of the proposed options are aimed at making followers of Islam feel more included in the organization.

But pithy they are not:

*?Tanthim al-Jihadi li-tawhid al-Umma wa-inkathiha, which means Jihad Organization for Unification and Rescue of the Nation,

* Tanthim al-Jihadi litahrir al-aksa wa-tawhid al-Umma, or Jihad Organization to Liberate Al-Aqsa and Unify the Nation,

* Hizb tawhid al-Umma al-Islamiya, Islamic Nation Unification Party.

Damage control was an apparent concern for the organization that has little oversight on an operational level with affiliates and those simply inspired by Al Qaeda's work. In response to a letter from Al Shabab leadership in Somalia expressing interest in identifying themselves as an Al Qaeda affiliate, bin Laden wrote, "If asked, it would be better to say there is a relationship with al-Qaida, which is simply a brotherly Islamic connection, and nothing more," according to the United Press International.

"Rather than a source of strength, [bin Laden] was burdened by what he viewed the incompetence of the 'affiliates,' including their lack of political acumen to win public support ... and their poorly planned operations which resulted in the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Muslims," reads the CTC report. Bin Laden was apparently disappointed by affiliate group ISI/AQI's arbitrary attacks on Shi?ite civilians, and warned other affiliates not to commit the same mistakes.

Bin Laden feared the frequency of civilian deaths that often occurred as ?collateral damage? in regional attacks were causing the Muslim populace to lose sympathy with the movement ??particularly when these deaths were ?exploited by the enemy,? bin Laden wrote, presumably referring to Western media and governments. He also indicated a desire to create an Al Qaeda Central, a term pulled, ironically, from Western media, to maintain greater oversight of affiliate groups.

Documents also reveal that in light of the Arab Spring ? something bin Laden viewed positively ? he wanted to focus more attention on media and outreach. In part, he hoped to rouse those who hadn?t yet rebelled against their rulers to do so, but he also acknowledged the important role media plays, as ?a [principle] element of the battle.? He expressed an interest in creating an Al Qaeda media outlet that could inform more mainstream Muslims about jihad, and perhaps spark their interest in the movement.

Dealing With Financial Fear - Personal Finance Advice

fear

Years ago when I was first thinking about self-employment, one thing scared me above all others. Taxes. It sounds silly, but I was terrified of screwing it all up and ending up in jail. Estimated taxes, quarterly payments, and self-employment deductions freaked me out so badly that it almost seemed better to stay employed with a company and let them handle it. Almost. Fortunately I overcame my fear and went out on my own. As I?ve not landed in jail yet, I must be doing something right.

I know I?m not the only one who?s ever been scared of some aspect of finance. Taxes scare plenty of people. Many people refuse to invest because they?re afraid of losing all their money. Some people are afraid to buy property. Others are afraid of starting a business. Finances can be scary because there can be a lot a stake. It?s easy to imagine all kinds of worst case scenarios where you lose everything, end up in jail, or end up the victim of a scam.

At the root of most of this fear, though, is a lack of education. What scares people about money is usually what they don?t know or understand. That?s actually good news because it?s something you can deal with and overcome. In my case, I didn?t know anything about taxes for the self-employed, beyond a few horror stories I?d heard in the media and from some other self-employed friends. However, once I took the time to sit down and educate myself, I realized that it wasn?t as bad as I?d feared.

I?d scared myself senseless over something silly. Are my taxes more complicated now? Yes. But with the help of TurboTax, the IRS website, and other helpful information, it?s not as difficult or scary as I?d feared. I get through it every year and I enjoy self-employment so much that I can?t believe I almost talked myself out of it, simply because I didn?t even know what I was dealing with. If you?re living in fear of something financial, here are some helpful tips to help you get past the fear and get on with making a better financial life.

Educate Yourself

Whatever you?re afraid of can probably be demystified with some good education. Read some books and reputable websites on the topic that?s scaring you. Take a class. (The fee for the class will be well worth it if you come out less terrified of money.) Or, talk to someone like a reputable attorney, accountant, or financial planner who will take the time to explain what you need to know.

Start Small

I had some idea that I would be dealing with so much money in my first year of self-employment that I?d never sort out the tax mess. Ha! The first few years I had so little income and deductions that it was easy to deal with. Each year I?ve added on a little bit more complexity, but because I?m acclimated, it never becomes too much. Whatever you?re worried about, deal with it by starting small. If you?re scared of investing, buy one stock or fund and see how it goes before adding on another. You don?t have to jump in with a sizable portfolio. If you?re afraid of starting a business, start by simply doing some side work while you?re still full-time employed so you get the hang of things slowly. Starting small gives you time to learn before you commit too many resources to something that won?t work.

Realize Most Things Can Be Fixed

I finally realized that even if I screwed up my taxes beyond belief, I probably wouldn?t go to jail. Mistakes can be fixed. As long as I wasn?t intentionally trying to defraud the IRS and as long as I was honest about any mistakes, I?d likely only have to pay the difference plus penalties and go on with my life. It?s the same with almost any financial endeavor. A bad investment can be sold. Sure, you might take a loss but if you?ve started small you won?t lose all your money. If you start a business and it doesn?t work out, you can close it down. You might take some losses, but you probably won?t lose everything. Rarely does the worst case scenario happen.

Take Your Best Shot

Sometimes you just have to try, regardless of fear. You can educate yourself so that you understand what you?re getting into and you can start small, but at some point you just have to jump in. You don?t want to get into something you don?t understand or that might put you in financial jeopardy, but if the thing you fear is something you really want to do, you?re just going to have to do it.

I?ve always been glad that I dealt with my fear of self-employment taxes. I wouldn?t trade self-employment for an office job any day. Had I let my fear rule me, I would have stayed in the safe job and I wold have missed out on a fascinating and challenging career. I still get the heebie-jeebies sometimes in April, right before I hit ?Submit? on that tax form, but I know I?ve done my best and that the rest will take care of itself.

Education Matters: Teacher appreciation or depreciation?

From the Washington Post's Answer Sheet, By David Cohen

Let?s talk about the word ?appreciation.? By the time this blog post is done, you?re going to appreciate that word in a whole new way.

I love words ? the sounds, the nuances, the etymology! (Did you know that the word ?school? with reference to a group of fish has no linguistic relationship to the education term with the same spelling? The former is German and Dutch in origin, meaning ?group? ? while the latter is from Greek and related to learning). If a love of words can be genetic, I picked it up from both sides of my genealogy, and especially from my maternal grandfather, Jack. If it?s nurture rather than nature, then it must be a result of growing up in a home where I saw my mother read two, three, even four books in a week. My father was an English major at UCLA, before entering the medical profession. He isn?t quite the voracious reader my mother is (who could be?), but he has a fondness for poetry and songs, and often used to clip word games and puzzles to share with me.

Last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. First of all, if they need to make a special day, week, or month for you, you know you?re already a step or two behind. I haven?t noticed any need to appreciate other professions on special days. I?m sure those people are appreciated, but more importantly, they?re treated professionally, and compensated accordingly.

If you are a teacher, or if you know teachers well, you know that we generally find value in the sincere words of former students, parents, or colleagues. In this regard I suppose we?re no different from most people. Spare us the apple knick-knacks, the mugs and T-shirts, and really, we can locate and purchase coffee pretty well on our own.

But the kind wishes and warm recollections that make us feel truly appreciated ? I call them ?teacher fuel? ? only operate on one level, one definition of the word ?appreciate.? That?s when you express gratitude and acknowledge the value, worth, and other positive attributes of something or someone. I don?t mean to diminish the importance of that appreciation, but at the risk of sounding like an ingrate, it?s not enough.

Appreciate also means understand, as in ?I appreciate the seriousness of the situation.? What would it mean for the public and the policy makers to ?appreciate? teachers in the sense of understanding them? Just off the top of my head?

*No more jokes about finishing our work at 3:00 and having summers off. We work more hours per year than most people, and for less pay than similarly educated and trained professionals. Over the years, my second shift of teaching-related work typically has started at 9:00 p.m., and it?s not unusual to send work-related emails close to midnight and get a response from a colleague that night, or before 8:00 a.m. (Note ? I actually think that?s a weakness rather than a virtue, but I?m looking for appreciation in the sense of understanding, not gratitude).

*No more missionary or martyr complexes. Yes, we care about the future and the children. But if accountability is a term that means anything in education, it must be reciprocated. If teachers are accountable, so is the public. Give us the resources to do the job you expect (or maybe you already do ? which would be a rather inconvenient truth). Appreciate that we cannot build and sustain the profession, or the education system, if we demand excessive sacrifices of our dedicated and energetic teachers, young or old or in between. It makes a great narrative for a while, until the teacher burns out, moves on, or ends up divorced.

* No more generalizations about our failing schools. Appreciate the complexity of the situation: while there?s much work to be done in modernizing and improving schools, simplifications make our work harder. Failing schools are not so easy to recognize, especially from the outside. To the extent that we attach labels and then begin ranking schools, we fail to appreciate the differences among schools, the strengths of ?failing? schools and the weaknesses of our ?best? schools. The label ?failing? is becoming increasingly empty of meaning as No Child Left Behind limps onwards despite its flaws. Teachers who work in ?failing? schools are unfairly stigmatized for problems mostly beyond their control, and teacher turnover becomes a cycle that harms students and is hard to break.

But wait ? there?s more! Yet another meaning of ?appreciate? is the gradual increase in value, as in, ?If the value of your house does not appreciate, you will have to sell it at a loss.? So, teacher appreciation would be most welcome in this sense. We need to make teaching more valued. I mean that in strictly economic terms applied directly to teachers ? more pay, especially for younger teachers ? and also more economic investment in the quality of teaching. Truly excellent teaching requires sufficient time to identify and meet the needs of each student, and to engage in ongoing, high quality professional development. If teachers are going to experience some appreciation, we need a commensurate investment in their work.

So, now, if you?ve made it this far, I appreciate you for reading, and I?m ready to join in not only some of the easy kind of appreciation, but also to carry on the fight for the more important but less understood appreciation that will make the greatest difference for schools, students, and teachers.

'Survivor: One World' Winner: 'I Got Lucky'

'I feel like people are giving me too much credit,' Kim Spradlin tells MTV News about winning the latest season of 'Survivor.'
By Josh Wigler

Kim Spradlin

NEW YORK — Thirty-nine days, 18 people, one Survivor ... and it's exactly who it should have been all along.

Surprising nobody but relieving everybody, 29-year-old bridal shop owner Kim Spradlin won the million-dollar prize on "Survivor: One World" on Sunday, and she deserves every penny. Blue-eyed Kim wasn't just the best-liked person out on the beach, she was the strategic mastermind who engineered the complete collapse of the game's men, a physical powerhouse with four immunity victories to her name, and a savvy enough player to sniff out a hidden immunity idol she never even had to use.

Watching the season, it didn't take an eagle-eyed "Survivor" fan to know that Kim had all the makings of a fantastic winner. But try telling that to Kim herself. Speaking with MTV News at the "Survivor: One World" finale, the pride of Salani revealed that going into the evening, she honestly didn't think she had a chance at taking home the grand prize.

"Honestly, it was just starting to feel too obvious," Spradlin said of watching herself on television this season. "I thought there's no way [I'm winning]. Something's up. Something's wrong. When you're out there on the island, you get really paranoid, and you carry that back into your life. So I feel like I came back concerned that I wasn't getting [the win]."

But it was a different story out on the island. Kim weaved her way through numerous alliances to secure a top spot at the end of the game, leaving more than a few bitter jurors behind in her wake. Though she initially feared their wrath going into the final tribal council, she ultimately walked away from that experience feeling encouraged.

"At the very end of the final tribal council was the first time where I really thought I could win this," she said. "Up until then, I hadn't heard the jury speak. I had no idea how mad they were going to be. And [throughout the season], they looked really mad. I didn't think I had that great of a chance until I heard them talk."

In the end, Kim credits her win to two things. "I really wanted to keep my options open. I said that a lot on the show. If something went wrong here — if Chelsea was med-evaced one day — I'd have other options. I never wanted to put all of my eggs in one basket," she said. "But at the same time, I wanted to be this great presence that people trusted, that felt calming, that people liked having around. I wanted people to think that I was on their side, so that they'd keep me around for them."

Her strategy worked, and now, Kim's already being talked about as one of the all-time great "Survivor" winners. Indeed, during a commercial break at the live finale, original "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch piped up from the back of the Ed Sullivan Theater to describe Kim as one of the best players to ever play the game. That's pretty high praise within the "Survivor" community, to say the least.

"Honestly, I'm shocked," she said of people's reactions to her game play. "I feel like people are giving me too much credit sometimes. It just came naturally to me. And I got lucky — I think that's a big part of this game. I've heard people refer to the butterfly effect out there: If someone stumbles upon a little thing, everything could end up totally differently. I think that's very true."

Luck is a factor, true, but there's no doubting that Kim's inherent understanding of the game of "Survivor" fueled her victory as well. Now, with whispers of all-star seasons coming up in the future — the next season, set in the Philippines, is already slated to bring three former players back into the mix — fans are already ready to see Kim return to the beach and walk all over her competition again. The question is: Is Kim up for another round of "Survivor" action? "How do you say no to playing 'Survivor'?" she said with a grin, before adding, "But I'm glad I'm not leaving tomorrow!"
