Make room on your newsstands and coffee tables ? there?s a new magazine in town ?
Live Local Columbus ?
(?Live? as in ?living,?? not to be confused with ?Live? as in a rock concert; its okay, heteronyms can be tricky) . So now that we?re saying the title correctly, what is it? Well, it?s like a grab bag of articles, coupons, and ads, but specifically for all things local. Businesses, Arts, Music, Entertainment, Dining, Sports, Travel, even Local Banking ? if you want to do anything, and want to keep it local ? this magazine is where to start.
????? Referred to as ?Your goofy grassroots guidebook to Columbus,? this magazine is the product of a beautiful collaboration between two Columbus giants, the Small Business Beanstalk and Outlook Media. With their powers combined, they have compiled a number of individuals from different areas and backgrounds to reveal a glimpse of the city?s immense personality (kind of like Captain Planet, but in magazine form ? come to think of it we should have a mascot, Captain Columbus ? instead of flying, he can ride a fixed-gear).
The contributors to Volume 1, Issue 1 of Live Local Columbus include:
Chris Hayes ? Live Local Publisher/ Talk Local
Michael S. Brown ? Develop Local
Brian Cheek ? Convene Local (Local Conventions)
Johnny DiLoretto ? My Columbus
Jim Ellison ? Eating Local
Jami Goldstein ? Local Arts
Cheryl Harrison ? Drinking Local
Ryan Kovalaske ? Give Local (Local Non-Profits)
Aaron Leventhal ? Travel (with a Local)
Mary Martineau ? Local Crafts
Thomas McClure ? Local Fashion
Corey Montie ? Inside Local (: Trivia Nights)
Pete Olsen ? Local Sports
Timothy Wolf Starr ? SBB/ Local Business MadMan
Amanda L. Thomas ? Bank Local
And me, Josh Weiker with Local Music
?????? So I?m not going to lie, had BusTown not been lucky enough to be a part of this publication, I might have very easily passed over it in the hubbub of local publications. And that is exactly what you SHOULD NOT DO. Without giving too much away, here are a few of my favorite tid-bits from this first issue:
an extraordinary expose about a number of local breweries ? its like a BeerFest, on a page ? this way, you can actually learn something AND remember it the next day.
Local Fashion ? by Thomas McClure ??
I?m not too terribly fashionable, nor ever up with current trends (I mostly wear the same drab stuff that I?ve had since high school); so I don?t really care about fashion. All of that said, I really liked the article about Local Fashion. Mr. McClure gives you a very descriptive, yet to-the-point analysis of what?s appropriate for the more interested local fahionistas; sans any of the over-the-top guilt-trips or life-coach advice that has seem to become all but standard from most fashion critics ?? ?
