Oculus Rift gets torn down by iFixit, adds high repairability to its kudos list

Oculus Rift gets torn down by iFixit, adds high repairability to its list of kudos

The Oculus Rift VR headset has had a wild ride so far after hitting its Kickstarter goal in a single day, raising a whopping $2,437,429 and gaining accolades along the way to the release of a development kit last month. iFixit (or one of its very trusting friends) was apparently one of those ponying up the $300 for the developer version, and naturally the first thing they did was put a screw-gun to it. The teardown reveals as tidy-ooking a design on the inside as the exterior, and iFixit said that it couldn't have been easier to do. The only minor hitch was cables held together by tape which would likely need to be replaced in the event of any surgery on the Rift. It's hard to say whether that ease of access will remain with the final production model, but the way that Oculus has gone about its business so far, we wouldn't be surprised. Check the step-by-step process for yourself at the source.

North Korea: Rhetoric or Action? - Night Watch - Townhall Finance ...

North Korea: Kaesong to close. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported,

"Secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea Kim Yang Gon visited the Kaesong Industrial Zone (KIZ) Monday to size up the situation?.

"Kim Yang Gon was accompanied by officials concerned of the Secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea and the General Bureau for Central Guidance to the Development of the Special Zone."

"Kim Yang Gon toured the Kaesong Industrial Zone office of the General Bureau, Kaesong Industrial Zone combined supporting center and other units and production sites inside the zone.

He also went to the checkpoint in the zone and the central line separating the north-south road along the Military Demarcation Line. ?

"It has become impossible to operate the zone as usual due to the south Korean warmongers' reckless acts, Kim Yang Gon said. "

"He held a consultative meeting on the spot and entrusted relevant fields with detailed tasks, urging them to get fully ready to cope with whatever development in the zone."

Later the Korean Central Broadcasting Station carried a statement by Secretary Kim Yang Gon,

"?Under the condition in which the South Korean authorities are showing animosity in return for our generosity and compatriotic affection, it has become inevitable for us to make an important decision regarding the issue of the KIZ."

"Upon authorization, I declare the following important steps with regard to the crisis in the KIZ:

1. We will withdraw all our employees who worked at the Kaesong Industrial Zone.

2. Under the circumstances in which the South Korean authorities and military warmongers are defaming our dignity and attempting to turn the KIZ into a hot spot of confrontation between compatriots and provocation for a war of northward aggression, we will temporarily suspend business in the industrial zone and examine whether it will be maintained or closed."

"The General Bureau for Central Guidance to the Development of the Special Zone will be responsible for executing the working business related to the important steps including the withdrawal of our employees and the temporary suspension of the business of the industrial zone."

South Korea: During this Watch, the BBC reported information from the South Korean Unification Ministry that North Korean workers, some 53,000 of them, failed to show up for work on the morning of 9 April. The Ministry said 479 South Koreans remain on site.

Comment:? Kim Yang Gon is the party secretary who oversees Kaesong. ?His was a combined Party and government inspection party.

The North Koreans cited as justification the remarks last week by the South Korean National Defense Minister about making plans to rescue the South Korean workers still at Kaesong, should they be held hostage. The North's reasoning is that closure of the zone will prevent it from becoming a zone of fighting.

The North Korean authorities have not expelled, yet, the South Koreans but that should occur by 10 April. Closure of Kaesong will impose an incalculable hardship on over 100,000 Korean family members. Jobs at Kaesong were considered among the best paying available for Korean workers.

The closure and departure of the South Korean workers will eliminate a significant security problem in the middle of the North Korean Second Army Corps.

In the Rear. Planting has begun. According to Daily NK sources, all reserve forces have been sent back to their places of work and the annual drive to gather manure for fertilizer is well underway, as of 8 April.

According to one source, "The reserves who had been mobilized for combat exercises over the past few months all returned their weapons to their local Ministry of People's Safety (the police) office arms store on the 1st (of April) and went back to work. Having carried out public and enterprise rallies in accordance with decisions made at the Party Central Committee plenum last month, each province, county and city is now working on producing fertilizer."

The source added, "Until last month there were Worker and Peasant Red Guards and other reserves on the streets, all in uniform with their backpacks and guns, but now there are only workers with shovels and hoes, mobilized to produce manure for the farms. Even those soldiers who were living underground in the mountains have returned to normal life in the barracks."

"Posters about war have been replaced with posters about the economy or slogans about this or that 'March Party Central Committee decision'."

Comment: Information from North Korea continues to be split between actions that enhance national readiness and actions that show normality. At this time, South Korean and US intelligence should be able to confirm whether North Korean soldiers have begun planting. Even the North Korean Army Corps immediately north of the Demilitarized Zone must grow their own food.

If planting is not taking place, then readiness in the four army corps is high and the situation is not normal.

North Korea-Japan: For the record. North Korea warned Japan that it could be the target of a North Korean missile attack if it does not stop following the hostile US policy by extending Japanese sanctions against North Korea.

Comment: Japanese sanctions are the harshest of any imposed on North Korea. Japan has deployed Aegis-equipped destroyers with ballistic missile defense systems and activated land-based systems to safeguard against a North Korean attack.

China and Russia are the only neighbors North Korea has not yet threatened.

Pakistan: Former president and chief of army staff Pervez Musharraf's application to run for parliament in the 11 May elections is running into trouble. He applied as a candidate in four jurisdictions, but only one has accepted his application, but on condition that he is not arrested for treason. That jurisdiction is Chitral in far northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province along the Afghan border.

Meanwhile a two-judge panel of the Supreme Court of Pakistan has agreed to hear five petitions against Musharraf to have him tried for treason for usurping the constitution when he was president.

Comment: Musharraf returned to Pakistan on 24 March more or less declaring himself its savior. He seems to have indulged a delusion of his essentiality to the future of Pakistan. His slogan is "save Pakistan."

The reality is that he has drawn no crowds of supporters and the general population blames him for the US drone campaign and for compromising Pakistan's independence by supporting the US operations in Afghanistan. He could end up hanged for treason because he did suspend the constitution without authority in November 2007 and detained judges of the Supreme Court, including the current Chief Justice.

For now he is under a Sindh Province High Court ban from leaving the country.

(AP) ? Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has a billion-dollar problem on her hands.

Brody, of Philadelphia, heard arguments Tuesday on whether lawsuits that accuse the NFL of glorifying violence and hiding known concussion risks belong in court or in arbitration.

Brody could side with the 4,200 players and let them pursue lawsuits, or she could rule for the league and find that head injuries are covered under health provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.

Or she could issue a split decision, letting some of the fraud and negligence claims against the NFL move forward in court. Her decision could be worth more than a billion dollars ? and is expected to be appealed by either side, spawning years of litigation.

"There are people who aren't going to be able to be around long enough to find out the end of this case, and my husband is one of them," said Eleanor Perfetto, the widow of guard Ralph Wenzel, who played for Pittsburgh and San Diego from 1966 to 1973. "He died last June, and I'm here for him. He was sick for almost two decades and, in the end, had very, very severe, debilitating dementia."

In the closely-watched court arguments Tuesday, NFL lawyer Paul Clement insisted that teams bear the chief responsibility for health and safety under the contract, along with the players' union and the players themselves.

"The clubs are the ones who had doctors on the sidelines who had primary responsibility for sending players back into the game," Clement said at a news conference after the hearing.

The players argue that the league "glorified" and "monetized" violence through NFL Films, thereby profiting from vicious hits to the head.

Players' lawyer David Frederick also accused the league of concealing studies linking concussions to neurological problems for decades, even after the NFL created a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury committee in 1994. The panel was led by a rheumatologist.

"It set up a sham committee designed to get information about neurological risks, but in fact spread misinformation," Frederick argued.

In recent years, scores of former NFL players and other concussed athletes have been diagnosed after their deaths with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, including popular Pro Bowler Junior Seau and lead plaintiff Ray Easterling. Both committed suicide last year.

About one-third of the league's 12,000 former players have joined the litigation since Easterling filed suit in 2011. Some are battling dementia, depression or Alzheimer's disease, and fault the league for rushing them back on the field after concussions. Others are worried about future problems and want their health monitored.

Brody honed in on whether the collective bargaining agreement specifies that head injuries are workplace safety issues and belong in arbitration.

"It has to be really specific. That's what I have to wrestle with," she said.

Frederick called the contract "silent" on latent head injuries, and said players therefore have the right to seek damages in court. Brody is not expected to rule for several months.

Players and family members on hand for the hearing included Kevin Turner, a former Philadelphia Eagles running back now battling Lou Gehrig's disease; Dorsey Levens, a veteran running back who made a 2012 documentary on concussions called "Bell Rung," and Easterling's widow, Mary Ann.

One wrinkle in the NFL's argument is what it calls the "gap year" players, who played from 1987 to 1993, when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place. The league, eager to avoid opening up its files in a court case, argues that those players were bound by previous contracts or contracts later in effect when they collected pensions.

"I certainly admit that the gap year players ... are the most difficult cases," said Clement.

However, he said very few people played only those years, and not before or after. For most, "there's no way to say the only hits that hurt you are the hits from those years," he said.

Tom McHale played in the NFL from 1987 to 1995, before the All-Ivy League athlete died of an accidental overdose in 2008. He was 45 and had battled depression and addiction toward the end of his life.

Lisa McHale, of Tampa, Fla., hardly recognized her once-gregarious husband. After his death, he was also diagnosed with CTE. She believes the player lawsuits, and the willingness of retired players to go public with their problems, will help her three teenage sons understand their father's illness.

"To know it wasn't his fault, that there was something neurological going on, it helps," she said.

Kardashian, mom, on witness list in divorce case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kim Kardashian's upcoming divorce trial will be a family affair, but her attorneys do not expect to call her famous sisters to testify about the reality star's brief marriage to NBA player Kris Humphries.

But Kris Jenner, Kardashian's mother, and several lawyers and managers are expected to testify about the pair's relationship and prenuptial agreement, according to a witness list filed Monday in Los Angeles.

Humphries is seeking an annulment of the pair's 72-day marriage, claiming it was based on fraud. Kardashian wants a judge to enter a divorce judgment instead and has denied accusations that she married Humphries for the sake of her reality shows.

She will testify that she "did not defraud (Humphries) into marrying her," the filing by Kardashian's legal team states.

Kardashian's boyfriend, Kanye West, and her sisters Kourtney and Khloe are not listed as probable witnesses.

Kardashian and West, who has been deposed in the case, are expecting a baby in July. Humphries' lawyers attempted to serve West a deposition subpoena disguised in a Nordstrom's box last year, just one of the incidents that have contributed to acrimony between Kardashian and Humphries since she filed for divorce in October 2011.

Humphries, a power forward for the Brooklyn Nets, and Kardashian were married at a lavish, star-studded ceremony that was televised by E! Entertainment Television. The network also airs "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and several spinoff shows based on the family's activities.

Humphries' lawyers have not yet filed their witness list.

The former couple is scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles court on Friday to try to settle the case in advance of a May 6 trial date.

Dante And Elizabeth Corso Reunited With Bandit 13 Years After Cat Disappeared

Dante Corso Cat

Elizabeth and Dante Corso were reunited with their cat Bandit more than 10 years after he disappeared in Las Vegas.

A cat has clawed his way back into the hearts and home of the owners that lost him 13 years ago.

The Corsos lived in Las Vegas when their pet, Bandit, disappeared one day when he was let out of the house. Imagine the surprise of Elizabeth and Dante Corso to get a call in San Diego -- where they now live -- that Bandit had been found circling around in their old Vegas neighborhood.

A microchip implanted in the feline enabled someone at Bonanza Cat Hospital to find the 15-year-old cat's owners and get them all back together on April 4, according to KTNV.

?This cat here has an amazing story. Yeah, I wish I knew it. All of it; who he?s [been] with, where he?s been,? Elizabeth said to NBC San Diego.

Bandit moved into a veritable menagerie. The Corsos own 13 other animals, KPBS said.

One of the other pets is Bandit's brother Coot who was never the same after Bandit disappeared, according to KGTV.

92% No

All Critics (90) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (83) | Rotten (7)

"No" is a picture that perches precariously on the cusp of a paradox.

A cunning and richly enjoyable combination of high-stakes drama and media satire from Chilean director Pablo Larrain.

A mesmerizing, realistic and often hilarious look at the politics of power and the power of ideas ...

A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

It's a funny look at the way the media warp public opinion, and a curiously hopeful one.

On every level, "No" leaves one with bittersweet feelings about democracy, love and the cost of compromise.

All historical and little drama.

Larrain does a fine job of making No look and sound authentic to its time period, although the VHS-quality photography, all washed-out with colors bleeding together as camcorders did in the '80s, is an occasional irritant.

Silliness is on the side of the angels in a brilliant and highly entertaining film that's part political thriller, part media satire.

It's clear that the language of advertising has become universal, and that political commodities can be sold like soap. But toppling a dictatorship? Now there's a story.

A reflection of a moment in time, made in the image of that moment.

Bernal deftly explores the layers of the character's complexity, including his political apathy.

"No" is filmmaking of the first order.

Old technology plus the packaging of a revolution add up to a Yes

Freshens up a decades-old story with vibrant humor and a good sense of storytelling.

No continually impresses for its slyness and savvy -- rarely has such an eyesore been so worth watching.

Larrain fashions an unlikely crowd-pleaser from a historical episode that has its share of tragedy as well as triumph.

Stirring as a celebration of voter empowerment, No may also inspire pangs of wistful nostalgia.

Fascinating work from director Pablo Larrain and screenwriter Pedro Peirano, who manage to slip into the skin of a beleaguered country and detail the urgency of a revolution, sold one jingle at a time.

Swims upstream against high-definition with a defiantly lo-fi approach that's also ingeniously evocative of the historical period.

Wildly colorful strokes, full of bitter humor.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. (AP) ? A young woman missing in a Southern California forest since setting out on a Sunday hike was rescued from a rocky ledge on steep slope Thursday, authorities.

Kyndall Jack, 18, was hoisted out of Cleveland National Forest by a rescue helicopter and rushed to a hospital.

"We have confirmation that we have Kyndall and she is alive," Orange County sheriff's Lt. Jason Park said.

Park said she was responsive but dehydrated and weak. There was no information on whether she had other injuries.

A reserve deputy suffered a head injury and was also flown to a hospital.

Crews had ramped up efforts to find Jack after her companion was discovered dehydrated and disoriented the night before.

Nicolas Cendoya, 19, was discovered parched and without shoes by another hiker shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday less than a mile from where the pair's car was parked. He was airlifted to a hospital.

Cendoya was talking to paramedics but struggling to answer questions about what had happened and where Jack might be.

"He was extremely confused and disoriented," Park said.

Kyndall's father, Russ Jack, told the Los Angeles Times that Cendoya was able to share some information despite his dazed state.

"Nicolas obviously was disoriented because of dehydration. ... He thought that Kyndall had already been rescued," the father said. "But apparently Kyndall has twisted her ankle or something and could not keep up with Nicholas trying to get out of the brush they're in."

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Jon Muir said he had not heard about the possible injury to Jack, and noted that Cendoya had been giving all kinds of inconsistent answers.

Sheriff's investigators planned to talk to him at length once he was recovering at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

The pair made a 911 call from a dying cellphone Sunday night and set off the search.

Muir gave new details about Cendoya's phone call.

"He was panting and said, 'We're out of water.' You could hear Kyndall in the background. He said, 'I think we're about a mile or two from the car,' and he was right about the distance but in totally the wrong direction," Muir said.

The hiker who came across Cendoya on Wednesday night went for help and found a firefighting training crew not involved in the search that just happened to be nearby, Park said.

They found Cendoya eight-tenths of a mile south of where much of the search had focused, about 500 feet from a dirt road that sees regular vehicle traffic. He was surrounded by so much vegetation that the helicopter rescue crew had trouble keeping track of him once they found him.

"When the rescuer was lowered he lost sight of him," said Division Chief Kris Concepcion of the Orange County Fire Authority. "That's how thick the brush was."

When he was found he was wearing board shorts, a shirt but no shoes.

Cendoya was in serious but stable condition, Mission Hospital's Dr. Matthew Kaplan told TV reporters.

"He's strong, he's young, he's a healthy young man, and he's pulling through," Kaplan said.

Several dozen searchers with help from helicopters had been combing the rugged hills of Trabuco Canyon in the national forest.

Two volunteers got lost themselves and had to be airlifted out Wednesday afternoon. They were searching the area because the Sunday 911 call was traced to a nearby cell tower, Muir said.

Muir said earlier that Cendoya and Jack's "probability for survival is good" with mild weather both day and night.

The two were believed to have gone off trail near Holy Jim Trail, a tree-lined dirt path along a creek that leads to a waterfall and is popular with day hikers.

The area is in a section of the national forest in the Santa Ana Mountains, which lie along the border of Orange and Riverside counties southeast of Los Angeles. The trail ranges in elevation from about 2,000 feet to about 4,000 feet.

SEO and Social Media Marketing - Best Web Hosting Reviews

social media seoTo understand the impact of Social Media on SEO, one needs to understand the core dynamics influencing the two disciplines at the organizational level. In fact a lot can be achieved if both these aspects are exploited to their full capacity by small enterprises.

However the problem lies with the practice of segregating the ?Social? and the SEO by most of the organizations. In a bid to step efforts to bring more traffic to a particular website, the organization simply cannot afford to divorce these two entities. They are not separate activities and tasks related to them cannot be assigned to two separate departments. Here are a few ways by which an organization can bolster its SEO by means of Social Media Activities

Ensuring presence on Social Media

You might have a series of Social Media profiles viz, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google + where you want your business details to feature in an effort to boost its visibility online. Your first responsibility in this regard should commensurate with you building a vanity URL with the name of your company. This is the best way to boost your company?s presence in the organic search results. Filling up the ?About? section meticulously with your business details brings the relevance of your site to the fore by letting you use specific keywords for attracting target customers.

online marketingApproach Social and Search in an integrated manner

Yes, as already mentioned above, you need to refrain from segregating these two aspects of your business. Train your Social Media teams effectively besides conducting due trainings on marketing, technical and editorial aspects. Enlighten them on ways by which they can channelize Social Media activities for bringing more traffic and avoid possible conflicts that might be stemming from their Social Media behaviour as well.

Posting Fresh Content

Simply by tracking your Facebook page will you be able to gauge the impact of fresh content on your Social Media presence and thereby on your search engine ranking. See how your business interaction rates go up when you post fresh contents regularly as against times when you don?t do the same.

Reach out to outside organizations

Roping in reliable Social Media or PR forms as third parties to boost your search engine results might be a viable option. However most of these agencies are not really well adept at handling SEO, though their core expertise in Social Media engagement remains unassailable. Be cautious enough to provide these third parties regular feedbacks of the SEO implications of their activities on SM.

Share only the ?shareable?? avoid spamming

Here the key responsibility of your SM team comes to the fore, as the engagement, traffic everything will be based on the kind of content you post. Develop an idea of what can be posted on the business profiles on the various Social Media platforms. See that the content is sharable. Remember the reputation of your business is at stake here. Thus act wisely. Know which hashtags are popular on Twitter. If a relationship can be established between your content and the hashtags, do use them

?Real? Authorship with Google Authorship? a wonderful step

Perhaps one of the best steps towards exemplifying the connection between Search Engine and Social Media, Google Authorship stands as a wonderful initiative to rope in tech teams to create better on site author pages. Both the teams dedicated to SEO and SM can learn about ways of increasing visibility of websites on Google + thereby conveying their inferences to the content and the editorial teams who will then provide the content accordingly. The Author Stats report and visual author information in SERPs are meant to give you concrete results of success.

Be there on a regular basis

Perhaps the importance of your social media engagement in a bid to improve the search rankings of your business has been stressed repeatedly. Yes its importance can hardly be contested. Thus you better maintain a consistent engagement level online

Author Ashley Jones has been seriously engaged with writing about the latest trends in Social Media. She admits that her four year long stint as a writer has taught her a lot and it had been instrumental in triggering her interests in Social Media and online reputation management.

Gretchen has quite a happy story to tell. She successfully lost 60 pounds and four clothing sizes in less than two years ? an achievement she credits to her personal trainer at Charter Fitness. "Mentally, I've never been in better shape. My self-confidence has grown while my waist has shrunk. I owe all of that to the dedication and persistence of my trainer," she added.

Gretchen's success is no coincidence. Charter Fitness has developed a "blue print" for success. All personal trainers receive extensive training and are provided the necessary tools to develop customized programs for members.

"We are very proud of our personal training team. A lot of members have told us similar stories about how they've become healthier and happier," said Dan Collins , Director of Sales of Charter Fitness.

Even after reaching her fitness and weight goals, Gretchen continues to train at Charter Fitness. "To me, the cost of training is worth the investment in my health," said Gretchen.

Human infection with influenza A(H7N9) in China

Apr. 4, 2013 ? On 3 April 2013, the China Health and Family Planning Commission notified WHO of an additional four cases of human infection with influenza A(H7N9). The four patients are from Jiangsu province in eastern China. There is no link between the cases.

The patients include a 45-year-old woman with illness onset on 19 March 2013; a 48-year-old woman with illness onset on 19 March 2013; an 83-year-old man with illness onset on 20 March 2013; and a 32-year-old woman with illness onset on 21 March 2013. All of these patients are in a critical condition.

To date, the total number of confirmed cases of human infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus in China is seven. Three confirmed cases were reported earlier from Shanghai and Anhui provinces, including two deaths.

More than 160 close contacts of these four cases in Jiangsu province are being closely monitored. Thus far, none of them have developed any symptoms of illness. Retrospective investigation is ongoing into two contacts of one of the cases reported earlier from Shanghai. Both of these contacts developed symptoms of illness; one died and the other recovered. No laboratory confirmation is available for these two contacts.

The Chinese government is actively investigating this event and has heightened disease surveillance for early detection, diagnosis and treatment. Infection prevention and control has been strengthened in health-care settings. Communication efforts between human and animal health and industry sectors have increased. The government has advised the population to maintain good personal hygiene, including frequent handwashing and avoiding direct contact with sick or dead animals.

WHO is in contact with national authorities and is following the event closely. The WHO-coordinated international response is also focusing on work with WHO Collaborating Centres for Reference and Research on Influenza and other partners to ensure that information is available and that materials are developed for diagnosis and treatment and vaccine development. No vaccine is currently available for this subtype of the influenza virus. Preliminary test results provided by the WHO Collaborating Centre in China suggest that the virus is susceptible to the neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir and zanamivir).

At this time there is no evidence of ongoing human-to-human transmission.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event, nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.

China mobilizes to fight new bird flu; Japan, HK on guard

By Ben Blanchard

BEIJING (Reuters) - China said it was mobilizing resources nationwide to combat a new strain of deadly bird flu that has killed three people, as Japan and Hong Kong stepped up vigilance against the virus and Vietnam banned imports of Chinese poultry.

The new H7N9 bird flu strain does not appear to be transmitted from human to human but authorities in Hong Kong raised a preliminary alert and said they were taking precautions at the airport.

In Japan, airports have put up posters at entry points warning all airline passengers from China to seek medical attention if they suspect they have bird flu.

A total of nine people in China have been confirmed to have contracted H7N9, all in the east of the country. Three infected people have died.

China "will strengthen its leadership in combating the virus ... and coordinate and deploy the entire nation's health system to combat the virus", the health ministry said in a statement late on Wednesday on its website.

In Hong Kong, authorities activated the preliminary "Alert Response Level" under a preparedness plan for an influenza pandemic, which calls for close monitoring of local chicken farms, vaccination, culling drills, and a suspension of imports of live birds from the mainland.

All passengers on flights in and out of Hong Kong were being asked to notify flight attendants or airport staff if they were feeling unwell.

Vietnam said it had banned poultry imports from China, citing the risk from H7N9.

In Beijing, the health ministry said the government will swiftly communicate details of the new strain to the outside world and its own people, following complaints it had been too slow to report on the outbreak and suspicion of a SARS-like cover-up.

Chinese internet users and some newspapers have questioned why it took so long for the government to announce the new cases, especially as two of the victims first fell ill in February. The government has said it needed time to correctly identify the virus.

In 2003, authorities initially tried to cover up an epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which emerged in China and killed about one-tenth of the 8,000 people it infected worldwide.

TRANSPARENT COMMUNICATION

China "will continue to openly and transparently maintain communication and information channels with the World Health Organization and relevant countries and regions, strengthen monitoring and preventative measures", the ministry said in a statement.

Flu experts across the world are studying samples isolated from the patients to assess H7N9'S human pandemic potential.

Other strains of bird flu, such as H5N1, have been circulating for many years and can be transmitted from bird to bird, and bird to human, but not generally from human to human.

So far, this lack of human-to-human transmission also appears to be a feature of the H7N9 strain.

However, China has yet to find any animals infected with H7N9, meaning how the humans got it remains a mystery.

"We know that it was originally a bird virus. We also know that it has taken on some genetic attributes that are not seen in bird viruses," Laurie Garrett, Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council for Foreign Relations, told Reuters in New York.

"In other words, it seems to have adapted somehow to mammals, to humans. How that happened, we don't know," added Garrett.

While the official Xinhua news agency said it was unfair to compare SARS with H7N9, as the new bird flu virus has yet to show signs of human-to-human transmission, it did warn the government's credibility was on the line.

"If there is anything that SARS has taught China and its government, it's that one cannot be too careful or too honest when it comes to deadly pandemics. The last 10 years have taught the government a lot, but it is far from enough," it said in a commentary.

Research identifies co-factors critical to PTSD development

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Research led by Ya-Ping Tang, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has found that the action of a specific gene occurring during exposure to adolescent trauma is critical for the development of adult-onset Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD.)

The findings are published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online Early Edition the week of April 1-5, 2013.

"This is the first study to show that a timely manipulation of a certain neurotransmitter system in the brain during the stage of trauma exposure is potentially an effective strategy to prevent the pathogenesis of PTSD," notes Dr. Tang.

The research team conducted a series of experiments using a specific strain of transgenic mice, in which the function of the gene can be suppressed, and then restored. The model combined exposure to adolescent trauma as well as an acute stressor. Clinically PTSD may occur immediately following a trauma, but in many cases, a time interval may exist between the trauma and the onset of disease. Exposure to a second stress or re-victimization can be an important causative factor. However, the researchers discovered that exposure to both adolescent trauma and to acute stress was not enough to produce consistent PTSD-like behavior. When exposure to trauma and stress was combined with the function of a specific transgene called CCKR-2, consistent PTSD-like behavior was observed in all of the behavioral tests, indicating that the development of PTSD does not depend only on the trauma itself.

As a predominant form of human anxiety disorders, PTSD affects 7.8% of people between 15-54 years in the United States. PTSD can cause feelings of hopelessness, despair and shame, employment and relationship problems, anger, and sleep difficulties. Additionally, PTSD can increase the risk of other mental health conditions including depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, and suicidal thoughts, as well as certain medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, and musculoskeletal conditions.

A favored current theory of the development of anxiety disorders, including PTSD, is a gene/environment interaction. This study demonstrated that the function of the CCKR-2 gene in the brain is a cofactor, along with trauma insult, and identified a critical time window for the interaction in the development of PTSD.

"Once validated in human subjects, our findings may help target potential therapies to prevent or cure this devastating mental disorder," Dr. Tang concludes.

Other members of the LSUHSC research team included Anu Joseph, Takayoshi Mamiya, Ling-Ling Yang, and Na Yu, and scientists from Luzhou Medical College and the University of Chicago also participated. The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Alzheimer's Association, and the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine.

Hughes Connecting Development Bank to Broadband; Kamran ...

Hughes logo_ExecutiveBizHughes Network Systems has won a contract to connect the African Development Bank to a broadband communications network that includes SAP applications and video conferencing, among other attributes.

The company has provided managed network services to the bank since 2008 through a communications network comprising of broadband satellite terminals at 32 bank field offices on the continent, Hughes said Tuesday.

AfDB was seeing a single vendor to provide them turnkey managed services, systems engineering work, statistics and reviews of the systems.

According to Hughes, the bank also wanted one contractor to install and maintain the systems and operate a multi-lingual help desk.

?We are proud to have earned AfDB?s trust and to be chosen as a valued partner in meeting their entire wide area network needs,? said Kamran Givpoor, Hughes vice president of global managed services.

Under this new contract contract, Hughes will connect four AfDB sites to multiprotocol label switching networks for high-speed Internet and Voice over Internet Protocol communications.

?We count on the continued support of Hughes and plan to integrate Hughes into our portfolio of telecommunications service providers we present to our clients,? said David Wu, a bank director.
