Rugby Union: Guscott - Lancaster must be tough

Former England centre Jeremy Guscott has called on Stuart Lancaster to become more ruthless in his squad selections.

Guscott - Lancaster must be tough

The coach has had a fairly comfortable time since taking over the side in the latter months of 2011 but things are about to become tougher with the World Cup now two years away.
Lancaster was previously widely praised for picking form players but now faces a number of selection dilemmas, as he looks to build a team capable of winning the world title.
A number of youngsters emerged on the recent tour of South America, but those players only really got their chance due to the absence of a host of regular members of the squad who were on duty with the British & Irish Lions.
It means there are sure to be a number of huge question marks going into the Autumn Internationals and Guscott says Lancaster cannot afford to hesitate when picking who he thinks can star at the World Cup.
"Stuart Lancaster must know by now that the biggest job he has as England head coach is selection," he wrote in the Rugby Paper. "England are two years away from the 2015 World Cup, with only another 20 or so international games left to get themselves in a position to win it.
"That challenge will test Lancaster's selection skills to the full. Above all, he has to make the right choices - and bear in mind that 12 months can be a long time in international rugby."
